Default Hood latch cable stretching?

In order to release the hood I have pull the handle beyond the travel provided for in the regular inset under the dash; I thought the hold down clamp at the hood was slipping. It isn't. I slip the lever off the pivot post, and on hands and knees, pull it til it releases. I have the cable as far forward in the front hood clamp as I can get it which may mean it won't make the release, but any further rearward and the lever is flush with the end travel point in the sidepanel under the dash. To install a new cable, it looks like the bumper has to come off to get to the attachment point. I really don't want to remove the bumper for something like this. It also seems to take a lot of pressure get it to release. I have lubed everything I can reach. tie a knot in it? Anybody have this problem?

What about the cable end itself where it attaches to the latch -- has that slipped? If it takes a lot of effort then it could be as simple as this. If it's taking a lot of effort to get it to release, try shortening the bumpers at the front corners of the hood 1/2 turn in to see if it changes anything. If it reduces the effort, the latch is binding. If it doesn't change, the cable is probably binding and in need of replacement. I haven't done this job on the shark, but I'd imagine you could use the old cable to pull the new one through.

I had the same problem this past summer. When I tried to tighten the slack in the cable at the latch, the set screw broke. I was sweating for the first couple of times when I drove the car because I didn't know if the cable was going to slip (open seseme on the highway). Anyway, it looks like too much trouble to fix so I left it alone. So beware when trying to take out the slack at the latch.

My release was very stiff, and after investigation, I found it wasnt stiffness in the cable run, or the latch itslef, but the strength of the return spring. I did actually pull the release mechanism off the sidewall of the footwell once. I softened the spring by stetching it, and its been ok since.

Well, I had a similar problem and it WAS the cable housing at the hood latch that had slipped. Seems that that's the place to attack this problem.
