Default Ditching the spare for a subwoofer

I was thinking about an 8" Bazooka tube like both of our other cars have, and its PLENTY, but something taking up less space and completely hidden has some appeal to it. I haven't used a spare tire in about 20 years, and the spare in there must be even older than that, so I have my eye on that space. How well is that working out for any of you that have tried it?

I've got a subwoofer in my spare tire well in my 88, and so far no problems at all. It never came with a spare, so i didn't really have a choice. I just carry my insurance card and my AAA card - so far so good!

As for sound, its fair - its got a 10" JL Audio (good) and a cheap amp (bad). I'd like something a little tighter sounding for bass, but the space is pretty limited, so there is only so much that can be done. I eventually plan to redesign the back compartment entirely, but until then its good, and the fact that it is out of the way is great.

FWIW - build a small box to drop into the spare tire space, rather than just a top baffle to hold the driver. Much better to match the driver to the box for ideal sound, the box has better accoustic properties and makes it easy to lift out if you need to get to the battery !!

Good luck !!

Yes, look up on the net how to build a box, dimensions and such, ported or not, etc. They are easy to make and cheap.

A section of sonotube with a "plug" in each end might work, but I might also think of a way to seal a baffle board without making it permanent (some kind of rubber ring and a way to expand to make it tight).

I've got this zbox installed in the back of mine. Made of fiberglass, has 8" Nakamichi Sub, sounds great. You don't see these around too ofter. I have seen a couple on ebay though, you would really have to keep an eye out. The leather was dry rotted on mine when I got it. Recovered it in some new leather, now good as new. Everyone that see's my shark thinks it's a stock unit. May not be exactly what your looking for, but thought you might be interested. Sorry about the light in the pic, I just went out and took it.

I'm running a 15" over the spare tire well. Works well, though it would hit harder with more volume. The SQ is great though as it's now more punchy than boomy. As it's only a weekend fun car and never sees groceries, I have turned the entire hatch area into a display for the 4 amps and a cap, that run the speakers. Just dry fitted with MDF so far but it sounds nice. Hope to have it fiberglassed and painted in a couple months when I get the shark repainted. If you do go with the baffle, you'll get more volume which is better, however, getting to the battery will become a pain in the ****. I sealed the compartment with clear silicone, pipe insulation, and dynomat. The well is about 1.75 cubic feet which should work well for most 10's.

The Zbox ^ is slick. If I wasn't so juvenial, I would go with that set up. But I have to be the fastester and the furiestester, yo.

Here is a set up I put in the GTS last week as part of the agreement with the buyer. It was not hooked up (also part of the agreement) so I cannot tell you how good it sounds. I can tell you it fit beautifully and looks great.

Nice looking work, bet it sounds very good too.

Low bass seems easy in a hatchback, but sometimes getting the 100 to 200 hz range to sound right is hard to do, and I think that includes what most people think of as punchy (like 120 hz).
