Couple hundred Watt heater heating up some fluid to make lots of fog.
Like 'em good ole toy trains that make smoke from waaaay back.
Attach some flexible hose like vacuum cleaner hoses and direct fog/smoke where you want.
Not sure if the smoke is safe for engine bay use though.
It's cheeep.

Just spray fittings with carb cleaner and listen for the engine to idle rough for a second. Ussualy works well for finding vacuum leaks. I've also seen a mechanic use propane, though I somehow think that would be dangerous, should it hit hot headers.
Fog juice is very sticky and would really crap out the internals of an engine. Indeustrial fog machines use dry ice still. The fog stays low, about knee height and rolls off the stage. Smaller chemmical fog machines create a smoke that is lighter and will fill the room it's in.

video production houses or rental stores carry fog machines. They do burn a liquid that leaves a coating on everything within a few feet of it. I use them occasionally for photos.
