Torque would impress me more if gears didn't exist.

Dana Jonston and myself were coming back from way up in New Hampshire after the foliage drive to Gretch's compound and had to deal with an Audi A6. This guy wouldn't let us by, we were cruising at 90 and he refused to move. Dana pushed it to maybe 120, but he wouldn't pull over. I maxed out 4th gear at 140+ and he fell back and let go. It was 10 pm, dark and 2 lane highway.
Some of the turbo audis have some tweaks and really scoot, so you never know. But 2 928's that want to go by? Get out of the way!!!!

Well here is my story of what happened to me about 6 weeks ago.

I over slept and had to be at the shop by 9:00.

I walked (ran) out the door at 8:47 and jumped into the 928.

As soon as the temp gauge got just up into the normal range I ran it up a bit trying to keep it under 100.

At a stop sign there was a soccer mom in a van with a pick up behind it, all three of us turned left at the sign and when I got out onto the road, I hammered it, you know the down shift hard into first gear, it was sprinkling a little bit so the backend did a little fish tail bit as I blasted past them on my way to a top of third gear run.

As soon as I got back into the left lane I noticed that the pick up had passed the van and was trying to catch up, no problem as there was a 45 MPH school zone ahead that was out of effect at 8:30, but I still slowed down to 60 when in the school zone.

Once I got past it I decided that I would just run it up to about 100 and there was no way the guy in the pick up could keep on this twisty country road in a pick up, he did try, from what i could see of him, he was getting smaller all the time.

I had to wait for a log truck at the next stop sign to cross from the other direction and the pick up pulled in behind me, as soon as I left the intersection the blue lights came on, DAMN IT.

I pulled in to the next subdivision and the guy in plain clothes walks up to my car and says "why in the world were you going so fast, there are a lot of my guys out working this area" and asks for my DL.

I said the only thing I could and that was "I was late and was just going to damn fast and there is no point in saying that I wasn't".

He said you need to keep it down in the school zone, I said 'you are right, I did slow down a bit, but I was still going too fast so i deserve what ever you get me for".

He walked back to his truck and about 2 minutes later he came up to the car and he said "I got to go to" , jumped back into his truck and left.

How is that for being lucky?

I do not know if when he called my name and DL out over the radio that one of my buddys said "it just Greg, let him go" or he really had to go some place.

I have been going a lot slower as of late.

The other day when I was making a parts run for my shark (in my wife's v6 Mustang) I pulled up at the light and some kid that should have been in school pulls up next to me at a two lane light in a LOUD ricer. He wants to go. I got the wrong car. What do I do?

This guy was even with my front wheel up to about 60 (speed limit here) when I let him go. He must have gone up to 80-90 just to make himself feel better. It took some of the best shifting I've ever done to keep the nose in front of him (lacking, as I was, about 100 hp give or take), but I can't help thinking how much fun it would have been to give him a lead in the shark then cruise on by without even trying hard.

no matter what i drive, i think people should move to the right when others are behind them .... if they can. i hate left lane hogs and squadron drivers. if someone needs to pass you ...LET HIM

I'm finding that more people want to take on the stock looking '86. I've almost been embarrassed by lesser cars until I tuned it properly, restored the kickdown, and put S4 rear wheels on the back. The 2.2 rear end is cool in that, with so much torque, the car s t r i d e s forward, while the '81 scurries.

The '81 looks and sounds like I'm on my way to the track. No one even tries.

Charley
I still have to see the GTS!?!?!?

Nice spankage.....reminds me of a trip to Bills a while back....

Gerry & I were driving through blackhawk to Bills....some HUGE lifted diesel Ford truck, with wicked turbo sound wanted to race.....we were at a stop light..he kept revving his engine......I thought 1/2 throttle would be enough to spank him.....damm did that beast jump off the line, but I guess 700lbft for torque at like 1000rpm will do that! ....he got a full length right off the line....but by the top of 1st gear I flew by him......still I was impressed.....Gerry was surprised too that such a huge beast could jump off the line like that!!

Charley - he was probably trailing you on 580 and torq'd that he couldn't keep up while at speed. Once you hit the side streets, I bet he turned up his testosterone drip and figured he'd rule the road with his size --> nice to be in an area that allowed you to walk by at will and deflate his "size compensation" attitude.

Good Stuff!!

Watch out for those turbo-diesel trucks...

Check out the quarter mile times at the end of the video.

Greg - I've never had to deal with unwittingly racing the PD. You sure got lucky on that one. I did have the local PD pull up beside me one night in a marked Durango as I was about to back into my driveway after a bonzai run home in the wee hours, and remind me that a curve, a few miles from my house, was off camber and could be treacherous at 80mph. I don't recall what I stammered in my surprise and confusion. I can only assume he lives in the neighborhood and didn't feel like giving a ticket to some guy he might run into at PTA.
Brian - I'm gonna try and make it to Nicoles for the TB party. Maybe I'll see you there.

Only in a Porsche, park them in the far reaches of the parking lot to avoid door dings, then pedal to the floor side by side toward a bridge with one lane.

Last saturday on 140 in Westminster MD. I came across a really souped and quite sic Mitzu Evo. Blow-off whooshing and all. Asian Fellow at the wheel. We were rolling 60-65 and he downshifts and rushes forward, then lets off while looking over with that" want som-o-dat?" look. I ignored it as I knew 140 is heavily patrolled. He did it again, but more aggressively. Damn that thing looked and sounded like a jet, and fast as hell! I bit on his next invite. I was at 55 and took it down to second-full boost instantly. 3rd came a couple seconds later at 80-super quick shift finds me still at full boost. 110 and I let off as I look around for him. About 5-6 lengths back...that Evo was quicker than I thought. I have dusted late(C-5) vettes with more margin. Anyone know those machines? No stock Evo's sound like that! BTW, my 01 7.3 diesel Ford with full bully dog set up is a nasty beast for 8000 lbs.
Cheers , Kevin

Evo's are fast cars setup right, I wonder if the guy didn't just turn chicken and lift? Stock is I think 290 hp, but I don't know the weight.

The evo was still full bore after I looked for him and let off. He was still shifting gears as he did the "ricer fly-by"
