Default Noisy power steering pump

It is getting pretty cold in these parts lately. My power steering pump is now making a groaning noise like the fluid is low but it is not. I get the sound when turning the steering wheel. I am guessing this means it is time for a new pump or a rebuild?

I cured my 'moaning' pwr strg by replace the filter/reservoir and flushing the system.

BTW...........its -20C here today; imagine how our pumps sound..........frig.

I recall removing most of the fluid from the original res, then undo the hose clamp that secures the res. that way you can move it around to get to the line hose clamps, undo those remove the old res.

Install only the input line from the res. to the pump onto the new res. Attach another hose to the return line which is long enough to reach a oil pail. Fill the new res with fresh fluid (remember tranny Dex III) and have other bottles standing by. start the engine and crank the strg wheel in one direction and the strg pump will flush the new fluid through the system and fill the res as it empties; be careful it happens fast.

I flushed 2 litres through the system before I shut the engine off, remove the hose on the return line, attach return line to res., clamp res in place and ensure theres plenty of fuid, restart the car and turn the strg wheel side to side a few times recheck the level and add if necessary.

All good, go for a run get everything hot then recheck the level.

I thought mine was going out after I changed my motor mounts, but it turned out that my belt was simply not tight enough-although I thought it was. And the cold weather makes them slip even more. Might try tightening if you havent already-its easy and free.

It could just be low on fluid. Return hose clamps often loosen up. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

hmm. Mine started the same thing the day before yesterday, our first 'cold' day. I'll have to do the flush job.
