Default Does your 928 Burn Oil?

My '90 GT seems to burn alot of oil. Is this normal? Did an oil change with synthetic 10w40 at 25,250 miles, drove it for approx. 600 miles and I had to add a little more than a quart. Now at 26,100miles it's down another quart. I thought only the GTS's burned oil. My exhaust spits out black soot (not alot)when I hit the gas in my garage. My exhaust pipe has a layer of soot in it.
Could it be that the car was not driven enough and some of the seals dried up?

do you knwo if the oil consuption is throught the rings or throught the intake system?

Every engine burns some oil, including yours. Ideally the amount of oil consumed gets replaced buy fuel vapours from the blow by (diluting the oil). Therefore it appears that he oil level is static when in reality the oil gets thinner and thinner. Next time you change the oil, just compare the old oil’s viscosity to the new one. You should be easily tell the difference without any special instruments.

Chris
It seems that a quart every 300 miles is excessive....even for an early GTS.....

My S4 burns a little oil...maybe a quart every 4K miles or so?

What do you think about the black soot coming out of the exhaust?

My GT uses about a quart every 1200 miles. The breather system is usually the main source of the oil consumption!

Everybody complains about EPA testing. I've had my problems passing inspection, but found that the PO had gutted the cat. I spent hours checking connections, sent the MAF and LH in for check. With a new cat and O2 sensor, my '85 went WELL into the green. I had some soot and a very sweet exhaust smell from a rich condition. Maybe it was worth it for the few HP, but my point is a benefit of emissions testing is you should have a very good indicator of what the engine (and cat) is doing, and whether it is running properly. You shouldn't have soot. What constitutes excessive, I couldn't tell you, but the emission numbers don't lie. I would check plugs first.

A little is okay.....how does it do on smog check.....or does your state have one....it should be very telling? It could be a combo of burnt oil & a too rich....I would imagine the oil can't be good for the cats or O2 sensor.....what kind of fuel mileage do you get?

My "89 S4 with 130,000 miles does not require the addition of oil between 10,000 mile oil change intervals.

Tha can be from a rich mixture too? Does the car smoke? Blue or grey smoke is an idication of oil.

My '87 S4 A/T may use 1 qt. in 7000 miles, it it just clicked over 100K miles.

My 49K mile 928 GTS uses about 1 qt. ever 3000 - 4000 miles.

My 5-liter hybrid track beast (85 928 block, 83 Euro S heads/cams) uses about 1 qt. every 2 - 3 track weekend sessions - but it also has a niggeling little leak I've yet to plug.

I think it really depends on how you drive it... On track - my 1990 GT with 25k since a total rebuild of the engine - uses on average 1ltr of oil per 500km. In normal driving I get about 5000km out of the same amount of oil. The car's breathing system is standard.

Don't have anything really intelligent to add here except to say that since installing my 'new' engine...88 vs 87....with 65000 miles on it and a fresh load of Delvak synthetic, the dispstick has not moved a bit with 7000 kms of driving.....some very spirited.......my previous engine, which had bearing issues, spit black soot on the rear of the car and went through a liter in 1500 kms

I think it is fair to say that for the most part 928's do not burn oil unless there is an internal problem.
