IIRR, in early 9 and 10 digit long chassis number years Japanise cars were part of the US sequence with their own serials reserved high up above true US models. In 17 digit VINs used since '81 MY they are part of ROW sequence and again high up above normal ROW numbers starting from 9501. As usual, 9501 to 9560 is reserved for prototypes and special cars. First normal Japanise production car should be 9561.
Yes, in most years, Japanese cars were production numbers of the 9000 series.

From the book I'm using as a reference (Porsche 928 by Jorg Austen):
Zählnummer: Die ersten 50 Zählnummern der R. d. W. Farzeuge sind grundsätzlich für Prototypen und Versuchsfahrzeuge festgelegt. Die Nummern zwischen 0050 und 0060 sind stets für Sonderfahrzeuge reserviert.

Counting number: The first 50 counting numbers of the Rest of World are for prototypes and test vehicles. The numbers between 0050 and 0060 are always reserved for special vehicles.

So Japanese and USA/Canada cars with low (< 60) numbers are not special vehicles, aside from having cool serial numbers.

As I've said, though, some info in the book is suspicious. I'll elaborate on that in my own thread regarding the website I'm working on.

Thanks for the numbers, and please continue getting me any information you have on serial numbers. Feel free to PM or email it to me. I'm not going to discount anything anyone says, just because it disagrees from the book I have. In fact, I want to hear as much as I can about where the book may be wrong. Again, I'll post more on that later.

I think all three sets had 0001...0060 reserved for protos and specials contrary what Austen says. If they didn't, his production totals shown before tech specs for each MY doesn't make sense. There is one old thread where I counted one MY in the book where total from VINs was 179 off compared to production total if 3x60 wasn't counted out. Why 179 instead of 180 is just one more mystery in whole mess.

Found it: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/130727-production-numbers.html

Danglerb, the two things to quick-check a Euro are this:
1) side-marker turn signals on the front fenders aft of the front wheels = Euro chassis
2) dual distributors on motor - Euro 300hp motor

Dual distributor engine is '84-86 310 hp version. '80-83 300 hp has single. Turn signals behind front wheels are not absolute giveaway as some early ROWs where made without them.

Garth, I personally will do my best..............no worries with selling recycled fluids for our drought stricken friends.

On topic, many 'grey market' vehicles make it to our shores. New 928s sold in Canada were US spec but as time went by Euro and Japanese spec cars came in. Some 'locals' do a good job importing cars that are low mileage and reasonably priced

The U.S. will be draining the Great Lakes long before we ever have a chance to stockpile.

Dang it! My two favorite signs. Thanks Errka for setting me straight.
