"Harvey, good luck in your search brother! Your car is out there someplace. Maybe a hard-luck situation where your cash can rescue an owner in distress. Maybe you'll stumble on to a perfect car in the local Pennysaver or at a local Ford dealer trade-in before it goes to auction. It could happen... More realistically, your perfectly-maintained car is in the hands of someone who has the same knowledge of and appreciation for the value and costs of keeping the car in excellent shape. That car will not be as cheap as others, but will almost undoubtedly be a better value than one of the "used" cars that still flood the market." Bob F.

Bob et al,

Yes, you may be right. I posted this topic to begin with because I really believe that the 928 prices will not bottom out for a while, although from what I'm reading from the Rennlist enthusiasts that's already started for us zealots.

I was right in that this is a sensitive topic...and am finding that listing my desire for a good 928 that falls within the general pricing of EXCELLENCE is probably not going to happen here....also, I'm in the market for what many others want (supply/demand).

I'm looking at a GT tomorrow and may or may not buy...depending on what I see and what my gut tells me. Indigestion helped me buy an English Sports Car once....not going there again. As Lo Miler says, there are some deals out there...but one has to look. I have a great '85S so I really have trouble justify looking at all. But I do want newer, better, faster since it is such a great car...even if I do perceive if as a pleasure purchase and not an investment. Rennlisters are like me and reluctant to sell because of their love for the car. We're almost zealots. Wrong place to advertise or express concerns about pricing curves perhaps...

BUT....I've learn a tremendous amount from everyone's replies to my perceptions. In fact, taken as a whole, the replies are more education, interesting than any article I've read in the mags on 928s. Also, I've learned a lot. And it just fortifies my resolve to buy another 928. I have the money for a certain level of car...and I'd like to shoot as high as I can go for that money and hope for the best...and hope to not buy too soon.

I sure glad I didn't start a religion thread of some kind. I'd have been both trashed and thrown off Rennlist! Hey guys, I'm still one of you! Just looking for a newer and better ride...but maybe that's a life-long quest? With the right 928, I feel that I may have "arrived". I don't want a collectible...I want a pristine 928 that I can enjoy the heck out of the rest of my life. My fear is that as soon as I buy the ultimate...some old lady will broadside my new baby. But, if I have 2 928s, I'll still be able to cope with life's travails.

Thanks for your insights and patience...but, frankly, there's a variety of thoughts on the topic expressed so it must be a topic of interest?

A guy who works for me (and races Formula Atlantic cars) just sold his immaculate M3 for about $20K...I think you can get one in lessor shape for less. He also bought an M5 with some minor tuneup issues that he's fixed and paid about $35K or? (He won't say exactly, good deal, car from California). Plus he just bought a full warranty like new 2005 vette with ALL the extras and only 1200 original miles for $40K. There are 928s that sell within this range. The M5 is REALLY fast! Also cost him about $300 just to get the trans oil changed. It's the typical complicated German engine. Race car w/street car body. But the looks don't compare to the 928. I'd driven the 'vette and it really scoots and has lots of comfort and many new gadgets...but I still prefer the 928. But I still think the newer 928s may have an edge over the earlier cars in some ways. And I aim to get one.

I think the responses to this list are mostly from people who have "fringe cars" That is, 928s that are much better than the average 928 on the road...and would not fall into the EXCELLENCE pricing model. Kind of like a shotgun BB pattern...most cars fall in the center and many cars owned by people on this list are outside the 30" pattern and should command a higher price that the general norm. However, I think I've learned that, by going outside this list, there still are still some good buys "out there." It's just that I hate dealing with eBay I guess. Also, when Tim listed his great '88S4 here for the price he was asking, it got my heart to pounding....I was hoping for a similar deal to popup somewhere. Maybe it will yet?

Thanks, all,

Harvey

Good point...but how many of us did that with our wives? The 928 is not a casual affair. It's passion at its worst. I wish I had your nerves of steel.

Dunno about you but I was pretty happy with the PPI on my wife.

Dealing with a professional car seller isn't anything like dealing with 99% of private individuals who respond well to honesty, and are often very accommodating to people with a genuine interest in the car. Most people would really rather have a pleasant smooth transaction with somebody that really wants the car for themselves, then just to get top dollar. They want closure, more than cash.

I hear you. I've gotten a lot of miles on my wife in 40 years...and like 928s, she just gets better with age...although the maintenance costs definitely HAVE gone up a bit. Still a good deal. I did fail to do a compression check on her coolant system though, as she overheats occasionally. I'm looking for a meltdown of some kind when I bring the next 928 in.
