Default Looped kickdown switch??

Hello all,

A little help please. I just purchased a 1988 928 S4 (Japanese Market Version)...after an inspection of the car I noticed someone has "looped" the kickdown switch under the gas pedal...by "looped" I mean someone has unplugged the connector and stuck a "U" shaped piece of wire into the female ends of the connector. What would the reason be? I have not tried to plug it back in until I get some more info.

The car in question

Congratultions the car looks a $1,000,000 well I know we all wish but you have a nice ride.

The "loop" to the kickdown sounds like a kickdown bypass switch set up, search on this board for it. It just tricks the Auto Tranie to change down without goung to WOT (Wide Open Trottle) Many people on this board have put on such a switch. So you should find a switch somewhere that activates the kickdown bypass, if all the electrical connections are sound then its your choice to leave it in or not can be lots of fun, if its just wires pushed in to a socket then I would either rewire and make them electricaly sound or remove the whole thing.

Yeah I have been reading about the Kickdown switch bypass when I was searching the Forums about my switch....there isn't any other switch wired to it....someone has just stuffed a wire into the connection. I was just wondering why someone would do that. I guess I should just plug it back in and see if there is any difference. I just want to make sure the reason it was done before I do. Thanks!

Cheers!

Sounds like a quick and dirty way to keep the kickdown activated at all times. Plug the pedal switch back in to return to stock, then wire your own switch around it to activate whenever you want.
Here's how the kickdown switch effects the shift points depending on the throttle position:

You will find the 'loop' described here : if you like the effect, wire in a SPST toggle switch bypass and reconnect the plug to the proper kickdown switch .... the downshifts can be too much in town if the bypass is left connected.

Hot damn! Great looking car and a great grab at a mighty fine price. Good job! Enjoy that one and keep her well!

Speaking of great, those are some great pics, too! Now that's how you sell a car!

Thanks!! She's tucked away for the winter now...can't WAIT till spring!!!

I plugged the switch back in and tried it out this weekend....not NEARLY as responsive as the down and dirty "loop".

Thanks again for the help.

Cheers!

The kickdown bypass can be dangerous on slick roads.

I think it should be wired to a reminder light, eg. the trailer signal light in the pod.
