How hard is your Auto's downshift from 2nd to 1st?
My Auto.'s down shift from 2nd to 1st, when I mash it after a normal slow start in 2nd gear, is borderline violent. I like a good firm down shift but this seems a bit harsh. This is most noticable when the dynamic kickdown is activated, not necessarily a full throttle kickdown switch activation.
No other tranny issues to report. Fluid level is good and has zero leakage. Scheduled for a fluid and filter change tomorrow.
Any thoughts?

You might want to shift down to second as your coming to a stop. At around 10 miles per hour there should be a solid authoritative clunk into 1st gear. If not, there is some adjusting that needs to be done.

I'm not sure what you mean by this statement since they are one and the same, unless you have an additional kickdown switch installed. I'm also not sure what you mean by "violent". If your already moving at about 40 miles per hour and manage a 1st gear kick down with full throttle, things will seem to get pretty violent for a few seconds, seeing as how your RPMs are going to jump to about 5 grand and head for seven quickly, if all systems are go. Think of it as flooring a five speed at 40mph and jamming into 1st gear as you dump the clutch. Not exactly your Grannies Sunday go ta meetin manuever.

As the car is slowing to the speed at which the trans shifts down, a throttle blip like one would do with a manual trans, makes for a smoother shift.

The dynamic kickdown can oly be activated if all parameters are OK. One of them is a minimum speed of 34 MPH.
My downshift under full load is pretty harsh but it's OK if you consider the massive torque...

Might want to try perusing the stuff on auto's at these two links, lots of good info related to auto tran setup/tweaking:

Thanks all,
I'm not familiar with the parameters of the "dynamic kickdown" so maybe I am describing that incorrectly. At a reasonably slow speed in second (15 to 25 mph) if I depress the accelerator pedal quickly & firmly to say about 3/4 throttle (just short of to the floor) the tranny will downshift to first hard. Then of course it launches like a beast. Maybe it's something I just need to get used to and play with.

Sounds exactly like mine so I would say it is pretty normal.

The 94-95 GTS has a special "dynamic kickdown" feature in parallel with the kick down switch under the gas pedal. It measures throttle opening and in the words of Porsche..."to make the 928 GTS with automatic transmission a more agile vehicle..." It works off throttle position and a quick movement. So basically if you move the pedal quickly enough to engage 1st gear the car thinks you are ready to rumble

My '94 GTS has the same characteristic - slams into 1st on kickdown. I have read that to reduce this hard downshift the trans cable linkage from the throttle assembly can be tightened a bit. This increases transmission control pressure and results in a smoother shift. I haven't gotten around to doing that adjustment yet.
