Well, a couple of strange things.
1. My headlights will come on without ignition-they point up in the air, BUT when I push on the brake they go off-let off the brake and they come on! This happens in down or up position.
2. If my turn signal lever is in either left or right turn position, with ignition off the same side cooresponding markers and rear parking light will be on and the chime warns of lights on. Front corner light will not be on.
Marker lights do nothing when the key is on and turn signals work properly. Anyone ever seen this stuff, normal, bad grounds, short?

I can't help you with your first question, but as for your second, both my 944 and 928's do this. I think this is a feature of the car so that one can park on narrow streets and leave only one side of parking lights on to reduce battery lost instead of having both sides illuminated.

Robert, there is some tie-in with the lights and brakes on -- possibly relay XXIII-XXIV but I don't have wiring diagrams here at work to confirm.
For question 2, that sounds normal but I'm not sure what you mean by corner light. Also I don't have a chime -- does it STFU when you close the door?
In any case, something is definitely not right, you should first go through and make sure you have the correct relay in each location and WYAIT, make sure each fuse is the correct rating as well. It wouldn't cause your problem if one is the wrong rating, BUT an incorrect fuse can sometimes provide a clue as to circuits that may have unresolved issues.
Here is an excellent fuse/relay reference: https://www.928gt.com/t-8586fuse.aspx

Oops! scratch the corner light, I realize it is only the turn signal. The front clear light does come on also. I found this in the owners manual, so it is normal.
The headlight relay is correct.
The headlight relay is correct.

Do you still get the same symptoms if you pull the headlight relay? Did you check the other relays? I suspect that if all that checks out, you may have some wires melted together on the back of the panel.

I have a 1988 928S4 5 spd. With the same problem, any luck fixinng yours yet??
Very strange,
When the car is not running, my headlights work fine, and hit the brakes, nothing, no problem at all.
But when I start it, and/or drive it, as soon as I hit the brakes the head lights shut off. I do hear a vacuum click inside, that seems to be operating the middle air conditioning vent.
Have any clue??
And my cruise no longer works (worked the same day before I had the head light problems)
Look forward to hearing from you, Thanks in advance

Ignition switch - I had the very same problem - changed out the relay - no joy; cleaned the contacts for the central warning unit - no joy; changed out the ignition switch - no problems after that!

2. is quite normal including the chime - this is for nightime parking (warning) use and the chime (with door open only) is to warn you in case it was done by accident.
1. Odd - sounds like a wiring issue (as Dave noted) either shorts or poor grounds - I'd clean them all as a preventative measure anyway.
Has this behaviour started recently - if yes what have you done on the car recently or what else broke...?
I don't see the tie in with the ignition switch directly - but sometimes a faultly switch causes strange things - if this is completely repeatable and wiggling the ignition swith makes not difference to behaviour I'd say that is an unlikely culprit - but try it out. A faulty headlight relay alone would not do this...
Expecially clean the grounds above the Central Electric Panel, at the Pod and at the front near the headlights: GP1 & GP2.
