Default Pic of new EL glow gauges l.e.d.s

Took about an hour tops to remove the pod, gauge set and put on faces and put it all together again. Slipped right over the pointers with double sided tape. No need to break clear lense loose unless you're doing the trim rings. I decided not to go with the chrome rings since nothing else in the car has chrome. White guage faces where about $90 shipped from www.speedhut.com They also switch to green with a rocker switch on the dimmer. Right side says "Porsche 928S", Left says "LANDSHARK". My car feels 10 years younger, like getting a good haircut.

I ran the power to the fuse panel after the fuse for the instrament lights. I wanted them to glow whenever the key was turned, not just when the lights were on. Sitting in park with the lights off, the guages provide a nice ambient blue glow in the car.

For anyone thinking of this mod, it was a 3 tops on the 1-10 scale of difficulty. Sorry the pic is a little blurry, but with no flash and the shakes from kicking the crack..

Also I took individual blue L.E.D.s and mounted them in the door rocker panel on each side ($12 total.) I wired them into the over head light to come on anytime it does, wether triggered by a door opening or manually turning interior lights on. Since the 928 in the door panel is clear, I just drilled up close to it and let the L.E.D.s shine into the numbers. Looks better in person than in the pic. It's a cool effect when you open the door outside at night and the "928" lights up blue. Also put 6" blue L.E.D.s under the dash to light up the foot wells. Changed the over head lights to blue L.E.D.s as well. Car now has a nice soft blue look inside. Not over board ala "Fast and the Furious, Honda with a Buzz Bomb" but still classy and just right.

If you have an OB Shark, do this mod, you'll love it.

I'm OK with the gauge dials I have but I went to take a look anyway -- it seems they don't make a correct set for a 78. Different layout.

I can rarely be bothered to remove the fuse when working on the car with the doors open, and as a result I've flattened the battery many times. Replacing the interior lights with 12v LEDs sounds like a great idea. Does anyone make LEDs that are a direct swap fo the cartridge style bulbs?

I bought some Racing Dash electroluminescent gauges off Ebay and never installed them because there is no warning lights did you have to cut yours out so you can see the warning lables from the original gauge set?

Would this work?

I stock it in white, but can get it in blue as well.

Paul - yes they do look for 44mm LED bulbs with ideally 9 individual LED's (brighter). You can find them on eBay. Often called festoon bulbs. You have to install them so the light is directed in the correct place - unidirectional.

They work quite OK but the bright whites are much whiter - like fluorescents vs incandescent. of course they do colors too. For the full effect you want (lower power) you'd need to swap the door end lights too.

Better yet a battery cut-off switch or an interior light overide switch...

I installed the Speedhut gauges too. Red reverse indiglo. The kit was easy to install, works great. I had to re-install the bulbs though; the needles were hard to see.

UKkid,

Aside from Ebay as Alan mentioned, you can also find festoon LEDs to replace the courtesy lights (doors, roof, hatch) on www.superbrightleds.com and www.autolumination.com.

They carry a whole bunch of other LEDs too, so you can change over your A/C control unit, clock, ashtray, pod *****, and guages as well. I also added a 44mm festoon bulb under my shifter gear indicators to illuminate those, but I see you've a manual trans.

Have fun!

Thanks Nicole but I ordered some LED replacement bulbs from the UK before seeing your post. Thanks Alan for confirming that I ordered the right size.

Nicole, your overhead led would be great in blue. The ones I got from Pepboys are only 2 leds and not very bright. Then again they are only $6.99 Get what you pay for.

1slo928, the cut outs for the warning lights are already there. Even for the german version. Apparently parking brake in german is 38 letters long..

Lots of color and design options on their site, even flames, if you're cool enough for them.

This is an S2, a "gray market" import to the United States. These European cars were subject to something known as "Federalization" when they reached these shores. This particular car was "prepared" by a defunct corporation known as Southeastern Compliance. I suspect the reason that the kraftstoffverbrauchsanzeige doesn't exist any more is probably because they changed out the whole pod contents when it came over. There is a number on top of the white plastic pod guts, but there is nothing that indicates that any sort of gauge existed at the bottom of the tachometer.

It was like this when I bought it.

I get 13 mpg on a good day; I don't want to know how bad my fuel mileage is while I drive!

There are no backlight bulbs. The gauges them selves glow, like a Timex indiglo watch face. They just stick on with 2 sided tape, so if you get tired of them or want to take them to the next 928 you get, just peel them off.

Now if they would make an analog clock face to match.. Guess I'll get those options from Nicole.

BTW Nicole, just got your power window switch overlays, they look great once installed. Better than new. In fact I just put in a brand new switch for the passenger side and had to use the old cover since it looked better with your overlay on it. Thanks.

I saw this thread while looking for something else. I installed these gauges years ago in one of my car and I made a video to show what they look like. It may be usefull to others thinking about this mod. Enjoy!
