Never dis the battery when the engine is running unless you put all the lights and heated rear window to provide some electrical load - else the alternator will fry it's diodes.
Talking of heated rear windows I have a vague memory of reading that the timer relay can fail in a way that provides the ignition circuitry with volts thus preventing the engine stopping when you turn off at the key.

disconecting the battery won't work if your alternator is working. pulling the fuse for the fuel pump is a much better idea or the relay probablly be a good idea to mark both of them. Cars will run without the battey I have done it several times in emergancys. You can bump start manuals but not AT if you don't have a good battery or one that will fit you can use another to start the car remove the cables and put them back on your bad battery. This is in an emergancy not a sugestion if other options are available. your alternator will power the car if you disconect the battery while it is running. opisite sanario I once drove a car from Mesquite Nevada to Las Vegas aprox 100miles with a bad alternator They told me that there were none in town and they would have to ship one up from Las Vegas in the morning. I needed to be at work In San Luis Obispo CA the next morning so I wasn't about to wait. It all worked out but coming off the offramp in Vegas the car died I walked to Autozone about a mile bought an alternator changed it in the gas station parking lot and let the car roll down hill and droped the clutch and was back on the road. The car was an old Toyota not a 928. battery trick wasn't used on the car prior to alternator failure.

Dudley & Jec31- "disconnect the battery!" I don't think so!
BTW- no need to get to the battery box to disconnect (for some other reason) just flip down the tool holder and spin off the neg cable attachment.
