how would you know its Euro, aside from the plate? Side markers on the front fenders?

I thought these were pretty much world market cars in the 90's

Euros have turn signals behind the front wheels and no markers. US are the reverse. Same for all years.

Wow, some really cool cars on that list! But I bet all of them would be at LEAST the $$$$$ for potential maintenance. The Camry would make up for the initial cost difference there!

I like that Maserati Indy, which i had never heard of before but has lines very similiar to the v-12 Ferrari Daytona's of the 70's, the 265???? i think was their model number

Top gear did a super car special for <10,000 GBP, they had a cool maserati in there, i forget what it was called but i believe it was a mid engine v6 maybe? It crapped out though and was a ****ty example but it had classic lines.

It was the Merak - the equivalent of the Boxter for Maserati as it shared over 50% of its components with the Bora - perhaps one of the best grand tourers ever made. Cracking car to drive with loads of character and Italian flair, if pricey and complicated to maintain due to Citroen hydraulics. On my shopping / wish list one day...

Picture is factory publicity shot from '94 or '95 and shows speed yellow ROW GTS registered to Stuttgart. This means its most likely owned by factory marketing department. Development cars were in BB plates as they were property of Weissach development center. As usual, magazines use what they have on hand and do not make sure pictured car is exact model they are writing about.

22662 cars made is total for all S, S2 and S3 including all ROW '80-86 S also, not for '83-86 only. '83-86 model year worldwide total is 18346 or close to it.

May be one day I will try and find out the top speed of my S2, I have only had it up to 140 and still a bit of pedal left. But I must admit at 140 was a rush both car wise and me wise.

As to investment value I wonder these cars here in the UK are being parted out like nobodys business so they are getting rarer just as important everyone who see's it loves it most can't belive the price they all expect alot more. Mind you I would love to get 19k for mine but then would I.

I spent alot of time in a Merak in my late teens/early 20s as my father had one and I got to drive it quite frequently. A bit of a slug off the line (3.0 V6 with I think around 220 hp) but great on the highway and rock solid in the twisties, no doubt to its mid engine placement and pretty low center of gravity.

What $$$ are they talking about for the Camry? Because if you can find a '95-'96 NSX for less than $30k it will have a salvage title.

The Bora was a great car if you replaced the highly restrictive exhaust. Still to this day one of my favorite cars. The Merak was a pice of ****. My neighbor had one and it was nothing but probelms and was not a great driving car. The Indy wasn't much better. The MB 560 SEC was a great car and if MB made cars like that today I would be driving one. Almost bought a Ferrrari 400 nice car sounded great but not the handler it should be. The BMW 850 was great car the 840 was a useless mistake on BMW's part. The early Lotus Esprits were god awful cars and the newer ones especially the V8 turbos were relatively fast but have serious handling issues. I didn't think the Alpine was imported into the US but was a great light weight car.

The one that cracks me up was the Jensen Interceptor. I saw one on the road yesterday and still think it is one of the ugliest things ever made. Not a dirers car in my opinion.

Out of the list the 928 and 944 would be my first choices. I like the Bentley Mulsane (if you can afford a newer turbo R they were fantastic) and the BMW 850 along with the MB 560 SEC but they are not sports cars and if anything qualify as sedans more than GT's. I would defanitely own one if I had more room.

Hi

Well on my Uk S2 on Nitrous...I have hit way over 180....speedo was clocked at top and didnt have my Satnav with me...but the Countach that I was accelerating AWAY from...told me he backed off at 180 plus...

I "WAS" using Nitrous though...but it does prove its NOT gearing that stops your top speed on an S2

All the above was on a private road of course

All the best Brett

no gearing in and itself dosent stop anything if you have the power to pull your top gear. I assume that at 150 the car isnt at redline, if it was at redline that would indicate that your maxed out as far as gearing goes. Typically before redline, you just run out of steam and dont have the power to pull any further.

HTML Code:
Porsche 944 Turbo 86-89
Great car, very quick and manouverable but not so well developed as a 928 (like suspension).

But, I would not describe it as exotic? would you?

If I recall, the '89 944 turbo had about the same performance as the '89 928, and the magazines (R&T, C&D) thought it had better handling. So I guess it depends on how you define exotic. By the 89 MY the price tag was pushing $50k, so they didn't sell in the large quantities the early 944s (esp the non-turbo cars) used to, so if you factor in scarcity it's probably still a contender.
