Help please...32v swap car to purchase?
Hi everyone, I found a car locally for sale for $3500. Looked like rainforest green, clubsport wheels, auto, owner claimed 67k mi. etc. Price seemed low so I had to take a look as I've always wanted a 928. Interior was rough for a low mileage car and as I suspected the odometer didn't work on the test drive. Car ran and shifted well. Owner tells me the car is a 1980 model but when I checked under the hood it has a 32v engine. Was this a common swap and if so what problems are common? The power windows are inop and needs a dr. outside door handle. I know I should prolly stay away but I'm sure I can buy it cheap. Any advice would be appreciated. Tia

I checked the vin and to my disappointment it is an 80 model(should have mentioned that). When I saw the engine I thought maybe I was getting lucky on a cheap later model. I wouldnt think this is an easy swap with all the electronics and such but maybe the car was owned by an enthusiast. I thought I'd post here and check if this swap is common. Thanks for the reply.

Common, no i dont think it is, thats not to say it isnt possible. If you were looking for an OB then jump at this one with a later engine, however if you had your heart set on a 85-86 i would stick with that as there are other improvements made besides jut the engine. These cars continued to evolve as do mot porsches getting better year by year.

Hmmmmm....
Every time someone has posted the question, "32v swap into early car?", the local experts have gladly posted the long and involved list of things that must accompany the 32v motor on it's journey to the early car. I can't remember half of it, but things like wiring harnesses, computer brains, flywheels, etc are involved. It's not a plug-n-play.
Possibility 1) Someone did all that work, and sold it to someone else who doesn't know what the car is worth.
Possibility 2) Someone did all that work poorly, it's a time bomb now.
Possibility 3) Stolen 32v car with '80 VIN tag - happened here last year, the car went from one coast to the other to be sold and there a sharp-eyed shark enthusiast spotted the fakery. The seller went to jail and the original owner got his car back.
Personally, I would stay away from this car. Way too many unknown variables here.

Carefully inspect, think about the work involved and what you can and can't do yourself, then make them an offer with the cash in your hand. Excellent way to get into trouble.

Do a carfax on the vin, and make the offer low enough that no matter what you would be happy getting the car. The worst that can happen isn't buying a cheap junker, its your buddy buying the junker cheaper and getting you to help fix it.
