OK so if that is mounted into the manifold after the blower/intercooler/ it would retard timing if the intake air is hot.... that might be good ! since the 85-86 Ignition brain is not nearly as smart as the 1987>

Reading the 84-86 EZF/LH test document, this sensor appears to retard timing 3 degrees at air temp greater than 50C or if broken/missing.

So by adding a switch inside the car which interupts the signal you get instant 3 degree retard....Makes me wonder how many 85-86 cars are running around with bad sensors and 3 degree retarded

Bill brings up a good point about measuring a heat'soaked TS rather than air temp.

Tony, you have yours thermocoupled, right? How wildly does this fluctuate?

Wait a minute you live in Vegas where it's probably always above 50c under the hood, so you're probably always retarded, right?

Oops. Better plug this one back in!

I thought it was only a fan switch...

Me for one! I always wondered what purpose the sensor provided. The connections are clean however the terminal casing spins in the unit, I think its toast!

Hang on the but the diagram Bill Ball posted, is for Temp 1 and that is a temperature sensor that is fitted in the air intake housing under the air filter this is just a temp switch but is it in circuit with the EKZ any one have a diagram for this?

It's mounted in the base of the air filter in the WSM shots. Here's the relevant PET page. Not sure what Tony is showing in the PET. In 87+ it's in the top of the manifold, but it no longer affects timing. Could be we are not clear on what sensor this is yet because the one Tony shows is called a "thermo switch" and so is the latter one on the top of the S4 manifold. So, are there two different ones? - a thermo switch and a temp sensor 1?

Bill yes that is TEMP1 that you are showing in the PET page but what Darien and Tony are showing is not a sensor but a Temp Switch which from memory has no conection with the EKZ or LH but it part of the Air Con system and not engine managment.

Oh. So where is temp 1 on Darien's car then? He no longer has the stock manifold to mount the thermo switch or the air filter box to mount temp 1.

Ok ,

what about the temp II sensor. What does that do?

I'll go for the obvious... it senses temerature.

Good question Bill, no idea where his TEMP1 is, but whats in Dariens pic is not TEMP1 I have attached a pic of TEMP1 for comparison.

The switch in the manifold 928 606 217 00 actually does trigger the secondary electric fan in front of the A/C condensor. That is the larger one screwed into the intake runner. The smaller Temp I is attached to the aircleaner lower housing. Temp II in the thermostat housing has two outputs it grounds on the block one goes to the LH the other to the EZK faults from Temp II include... poor hot start, engine hesitation, low power out put, high fuel consumption,missing,poor-pickup,engine hard to start, engine will not start "......to name a few And I wonder how many 85-95 are running around with a bad temp sensor II ??

Jim and aguk928 answered all of our questions (thanks!) except what happened to Darien's temp sensor 1, and that's the important one for the ignition. My guess - it's dangling in the wind under the SC manifold.
