From the Service Info Booklet for the '87 model year:

"Application of knock regulation has permitted omission of the intake air temperature sensor NTC I
used in the lower air cleaner section in the past ."

Thanks for all the input

Looks like more investigating is in order...any idea what the 160.31 number could be??

If you look at the attached pics, the switch/sensor to the right that's installed (t-stat housing) is wrapped in the same stock wire wrap with the mystery switch/sensor. My guess is that it was installed toward the front of the old manifold??

Wow..amazing what discussion can come up!

I dont ever recall seeing the sensor in the lower part of the air filter box on Dariens car??
Darien, perhaps go out to the pile-o-parts and see if there is one on there?

That sensor shown in the original pics screws into his manifold..im almost 100% certain of that.

Part number 7 shown by Bill in PET and the picture of it from Aguk928 doesnt look familiar.
Hmmmm...

The one that screws into the intake manifold is relatively unimportant. I'm curious what happened to the one in the lower air filter box.

The "thermo switch" originally mentioned was fitted to both Euros and 85/86 US. It triggers at about 90deg C and switches on the auxillary electric fan in front of the aircon rad. To try and reduce heat build up , especially when engine is stopped. This sensor is just a switch. It will switch the fan on, even if the igntion is switched off.

Its equivalent on a >87 is the sensor mounted on top of the inlet plenum, right at the back of the engine.

Temp 1 is intake air temp.

Well, then, you just gave away 3 degrees of timing. Maybe not such a bad idea with an SC.

You could take the sensor off the air filter box and hunt for the lead at the back of your motor and hook it up and see what happens.

I'm not very good with the graphics, but I tried.
Both sensors are mounted under the intake air ducts so you can't see them.
