Default New twist for the early leather dash

Hello all,

as you all know, the vent area, especially on the older dashes, is a problem.
If your dash originally came with leather, the vents are covered with plastic trims. Those do not necessarily stop the leather from pulling away.

If your dash came with vinyl, you don't have the plastic trims. So if you want to cover it in leather, you either need to find some factory trims, or just slit the leather, glue it to the edges of the vents and hope for the best.

I've been trying to come up with something better and I think I found it:

This treatment gives me as much leather to roll and glue under the dash surface as I want and the look add a custom touch that should have been there to begin with.

As always, your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

I'm with ya on that one.......I should just get a credit card and send it to Paul directly!! :>)

I keep looking at my perfect, but plain vinyl, dash-pod-center console & I keep thinking how much better they would look in leather with tan stitching like my armrest & shifter!! Then of course I want the softer armrests in the doors....then the leather door speaker panel...& so on & so on....DAMM DAMM DAMM......"must resist temptation!"

Paul this is very nice. I love it. I do prefer my later-style vent insert (one piece) and I would LOVE to have a leather version of that. In the case of leather around the vents my only concern is that wet air comes through there and leather is bound to not handle this well. With the plasticrap insert that looks nice (again, later style) this is a nonissue.
Keep on doing what you're doing my friend. Btw I will send my pod in the next few weeks

Hey H,

I don't think that is an issue with this system. I devised it to counteract this very problem.
The way it is done, the "wet air" only contacts the finished, treated face of the leather. And the trailing edges reach far under and are glued over a large area.

A quarterly application of a good leather conditioner will keep everything in place and the leather looking beautiful for the next 20 years

I do have every intention to do the later style as well. I will also make leather covers for the plastic cap itself for those with a good dash that just want to add a custom touch.

Paul,

nice.
So now I have to rip out my perfectly good leather dash and start over again
I used to think my new plastic vent covers looked good until now.

Do I even want to ask what kind of a job I'm getting into by removing my dash?

After rod bearings and 12 double disc clutch jobs in one month, please tell me this is an easier job.

Give me some time Rich and I will come up with a solution to cover that plastic without ripping out the dash.
