Default S4 Auto to Manual conversion

i have planned a manual gearbox conversion for my '87 Strosek S4,
as now i have been through 2 auto boxes and the LSD is sounding rather scrunchy... after my Andy Keel SC conversion works so well, its just killing auto boxes (1 just lasted a week)... she is used mainly on the track and i would prefer a manual anyway...

so i am looking for a bulkhead plate for a left hooker for the master cylinder...
can anyone help ?...

Cheers,
Rich

Rich,
Did you try calling Douglas Valley to see if they have a crunched one with a good bit of bulkhead ?

Thats odd.....since the auto is generally considered stronger than the 5-speed? Especially with the hardened AMG internals!

BillB has been trying really hard to blow up his auto, for almost two years since his twinscrew was installed! I was right behind him when he did a very impressive burnout leaving Sharktoberfest.....I would say at least as good as the video from last year since he was going faster when it started! I just wish I have the video rolling!

Having done this myself, I'd say the best thing to do is find a donor car with a broken engine, and swap everything over side-by- side. It isn't a terribly difficult swap, but it could get expensive if you do one part at a time. I received a great deal of help and psychological counselling from 928 Int'l when I did mine.
Having said that, I would still do it again if keeping the car is important, and yours certainly looks like a keeper...
Good Luck!

Thanks Guys,
not tried Douglas Valley as they have f*&$d over a few 928 owners over here
by taking payments and not sending the parts... i was also going to try Belgium and Germay...

seem to get conflicting opinions on the auto box issue, "good only for taking 400bhp"...
as in a manual with a racing cluch will be fine, and transfer the power much more readly...

but can say that both auto boxes where fine ...before been subjected to the power of SC...

Cheers,
Rich

Rich - well D-V is pretty local for you - you could call them and if they say they can do it - go up there and supervise what gets cut out - that way you get exactly what you need and leave with it in hand...

I have dealt with them several times and have had no issues remotely (very remotely!).

However I was thinking for a RHD the UK is your best bet... but I see its actually a LHD car so maybe they are less likely to have what you need anyway!

Call Jim at 928Intl or Dave at 928Spec. and see if they have any MT bodies getting sliced up - they will at least know what you need chopped out!

rich, saw the beast at paul andersons the other day and i bet you cant wait to get it back on the road.. mine is still in germany after developing some kind of ignition fault at the weekend! id guess that 928 international should know exactly what you need as they have done this before.

Hi Rich, it's obviously worth spending time talking to Nick and Alex, both of whom have converted their cars. It doesn't appear to be very easy to get the pedal box aligned correctly, and since pedal position on 928 manuals is perfect it would seem a shame not to get this right.

I was at DV a few weeks ago.

They seemed to be good to deal with.

They fork lifted a GTS right off the rack for me to pick at.

Porsche a part UK also had a Japan S4 that they were breaking. Sorry, dont remember weather it was a 5 spd or not.

Cheers,
Michael

The pedal box alligns perfectly - the hole for the clutch is in the firewall even on auto cars - you just need to push through the plastic cap...

Your biggest problem is that you have to source a rear cross member from a manual car because the auto one is different, and as a result your newly installed 5spd box will bang against the cross member...

I also disagree on the perfect pedal position - left foot braking in the 928 is nigh on impossible as the clutch is so far away from the brake / accelerator...

Cheburator, I've considered putting the automatic brake pedal back in just for the reason you mentioned- I think it will fit. And my car did NOT have a hole, or the double reinforcement for the clutch master cyl in the firewall. Maybe older cars do... 928 int'l cut the pieces out of a car and sent them to me. Other than that, it was a straightforward swap.

The hole in the firewall (on the right side) could be 927 only thing.

Yes, i have her back from Paul's, she's running a little off colour, Paul will have a look this thurday on our CC trackday...

...the UK (right hand drive) car shell is adapted for both auto and manual... the left hookers are all either auto or manual shells, to change an auto to manual, the bulkhead needs the manual master cylinder section of the bulk head graphted in... i have all the other parts needed from Dr. Paul Anderson...

may try (with fingers crossed) D-V for the part.

Cheers,
Rich

The piece of firewall Mark sent me had the doubler spot-welded to it. I drilled the spotwelds out and used the piece of firewall for a template to cut the hole in my firewall, then bonded/riveted the doubler in. Worked like a charm! You should be able to get this piece from 928 int'l if no LHD cars are avalable over there...
