to wing or not to wing
I have a 79. I dont think 79 came with a any type of wing. And i have to say I really dont like the way the car looks with out a wing/spoiler.... I have a fiberglass GT wing (replica) that i could put on... but i am torn becasue that wing was never on my body style and i dont want to pimp the car.... I could get my hands on an s wing but i heard they are hard to put on the car. I guess there were some hatch mods or something... so my question is what should it do....

it is much easier to add a S4 wing than the S wing. I think it looks great, look at my sig. The best part for me is if I want to remove it, just unscrew the 4 nuts holding it on. I got some caps painted body color, pop those in, and PRESTO! Back to the smooth look.

It would be much easier & cheaper just to sell it and buy a turbo, um, I mean one with a wing
I'm torn with this idea myself. I love the look of a clean, no spoiler OB. Very original, classic, retro, whatever. I have an OEM S4 wing (thanks Taddeus) for my 79 track car. Since it already has the S front spoiler & it's a track car, I'll use the wing. If it were a street car, I would keep it original.
It's like the pre 964 911's to me. Growing up I did not like the look of any 911 (or 928) without a wing. I was not "into" 928's enough to realize what the different wings were - nor did I care with the 911's. The wing was just cool. Now looking around at all the car events I attend, I almost never see a pre 964 911 without a waletale. Everyone added one to their car. So now when I see an ultra clean 911 with no wing - it's different, special in a way. Same goes for the OB's. Everyone and their brother are installing wings on the early cars - to the point where a clean spoiler / wingless OB is the rarest of the breed.

My '79 came with a wing when I bought it, and I'm going to take it off eventually because I want it to be original. I don't think it looks bad, I just want it original. Plus, there's a little rust on the post so it'll have to be fixed at some point.

A clean tail on a pre-S4 is gorgeous. It's one thing to speculate, but another to see one in person; Andrew Olson's old car was...well...perfect without a spoiler.
It needed a supercharger, though, eh, Andrew?!

Up-Fixin der Porsche, volume IX, page 282 has an article on adding S spoilers to an early 928. It looks just like an S when done right, and the article says it lowers areodynamic drag by 10% and provides better brake cooling.
I have no idea what real benefits you would see just doing the rear. If it's just for looks, I think I like Borys' S4 look better.
Regardless, the article is pretty cool. It includes all parts numbers and everything.
Have any of you PCA members notice that you can get all the available Up-Fixin books for free (While they last - I think shipping was $25)? This is an amazing set of books.

OK, can't resist...
I dislike the S4 wing including on S4s.
It's ugly in itself and disrupts the lines of the car. What it says is the need to have a wing because it's "sporty" like kids have done to 1000000 Hondas and Toyotas.
If you're going to race a hi-po car then get a big wing and stick it high in the air. The S4 wing isn't doing much for racing. Sure, it does some "spoiling" and reduces drag but (IMHO) the Cd improvements of the S4 were at the front of the car.
Could be a good place to set the beverage of your choice, though.

I prefer the "bareback" look myself... recently you were talking about selling the car. If you're still likely to sell, I wouldn't do it. This may be an issue to prospective buyers. If you're going to keep it, well... it's your car.
