Okay my cracked windshield needs replacement.....a couple local glass shops have quotes that range all over the place. Niello quoted me $988 just for the windshield alone (not installation kit)....& thats a Sekuriflx windshield?....the new name of Sekurit I guess. Another local shop quoted me $447.40 installed for a FYG aftermarket glass.....has anyone installed one of these? Is FYG the cheapo chinese glass? I've got quotes up to $1400 for the Porsche part installed?
MY is an 1988 S4 with the windshield antenna!
Ideas......?

Brian install a roof mount ant and run the cheaper windscreen because sooner or later your new one will get chipped cracked besides you get better reception with the roof ant

I just had mine installed last week at a local body shop with Sigla german glass. The claim form showed it was about $350 including installation. Green, with green tint at the top

I had a sekurit windshield installed (insurance paid
) for $1000 plus and it had an antenna. However, it clowns cut the A pillar upholstery and installed the glass off center so the trim strips don't match. I spent a couple of hours just realigning them (barely). And I was standing there watching as the circus took place. They claimed they would pay for the cut upholstery, but I never went back. I just got a tube of preparation H and gutted it all out. Screwed once, why go back for more? And this windshield is already starting to pit again. I would take Jim Bailey's advice next time, but don't want to have to deal with the antenna when I cover the car which is almost every day.
Good luck. You'll need it.

Last time they put in junk Chinese glass. I think it was the brand Brian mentioned. Previously thay had used Pilkington. I've never been able to get Sigla, but I think you can ask them to look for other glass than the Chinese stuff. Mine has a visible ripple. If someone could get Sigla locally for $350, like Rob Budd did, I'd be impressed. All-Star's website indicates they use Sekurit as well as Pilkington, PPG, etc.

Pilkington is a company I grew up with in South Africa, their products should be highest grade because South African industrial standards greatly exceed US standards from a consumer perspective. I would be interested in hearing what the Pilkington product did long-term. I have installed ONLY SIGLA in my cars and i absolutely refuse to cut holes and instal what looks to me like a BMW antenna. No offense
... I love clean lines. More clutter, alien receiver satellite dishes and hunting lights as well as roof racks and towing mirrors are not for me. Less is more.

Yes, Pilkington has a good reputation for high-quaility glass (use mercury float - no ripples). Unfortunately, I think the Chinese stuff is squeezing them out. I had Pilkington in once, and it seemed fine - until another one of the unregulated gravel truck haulers who didn't sweep off his truck fenders got me.

Some of the early cars that had the "bronze" tint are becoming difficult to find. The Sigla windshield in bronze tint is NLA from Porsche. I had a glass company looking for the genuine Sigla glass from German glass companies for 3 weeks with no luck until I decided I would go with Safevue glass.
The Safevue glass does have some interesting features. First there is a blue shade at the top of the glass that Sigla does not have and they claim the UV protection is better on the newer windshields. I am concerned about the hardness though. I know several people have had problems with the glass being wavey and pitting quickly. I have no info on this but will find out when I install.
The "green tint" glass which started in ~82 or 83 is much easier to find. Sigla, Pilkington and a few others (including the Chinese) are still in good supply. The only problem arises if you have bronze tint glass and can't find a replacement and end up having to use the green tint.
I still need to replace my windshield and I'm thinking of having a get together like Ed did to replace it. I just need to finish up the 84 and get it out of the shop.
