Not to hijack the topic, but I've been sending ebay tons of emails concerning fake emails and even worse, fake auctions. These fake listings appear on ebay as an actual item...when you click on the link (just to look), a fake login screen appears. When you enter your information, you are taken to a fake "this item is no longer available" screen. Everything looks legitimate. When I encounter these auctions, I type in a fake ID and password to verify the validity of the screen.

Here's the rule of thumb: If you don't know if something is valid (ebay, paypal or any other site), DO NOT ENTER YOUR INFORMATION!!!

Andreas...I would contact paypal to see if you can retract the payment. I assume that the payment wasn't for an ebay auction. If this is the case, the person (carl@928mortorsports.com) would have to accept the payment. If no one accepts the payment, the funds will not be transferred. Just in case, I would definitely contact paypal.

Either way let us know...we can all use additional information on how these systems (ebay, paypal, etc) work.

Good luck...

Roger

Don't take sublimate too seriously. I know he knows that you do not think it is funny, but we must all find the humor in life and get on with it.

Your money should be safe. If it is cancelled they do not get the money.

You will not have a problem if you type in eBay's url in your browser's 'Address' area. If you don't want to do that all the time, type in the url, hit 'Go' or hit Enter, and once at the site, save it as a 'Favorites'.

Once you are safely on eBay (..or any other site), do a search on the item's number or description.

Default Paypal rant...

Andreas, (and anybody else who even looks at that evil logo)...

Preface: There are many thousands of transactions that take place every day using paypal that go off without a hitch.

Rest of the story: Paypal has ~50,000 unresolved complaints, the CA AG is investigating/suing them, there's more individual suits against paypal than you can shake a stick at, and that's the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There's a reason that company was sold...

Paypal offers buyers a multitude of ways to scam sellers. Paypal offers sellers a multitude of ways to scam buyers. Paypal offers paypal even more ways to screw buyers and sellers.

(FWIW, Paypal is FAR riskier for a seller. There's 10 ways somebody can get you to deliver items and then claim some BS. By the time you get paypal to even answer you as a merchant, the customer and their stolen cc number are long gone. Guess who get's screwed? Not paypal, nor will they even look for the guy who had the stolen cc. They'll just debit the money out of the merchant's account. Nice, huh?)

Just google up something like ' paypal lawsuits'. You'll get more reading material than you'll ever want.

You'll readily find MANY tens of thousands of folks that have been screwed by a buyer, a seller, or, best of all, Paypal itself.

Paypal could give a rat's a$$ about anybody but Paypal. They make money like lotsa semi-shady enterprises do - on the float. Your float. This is above and beyond the absolutely ridiculous fees, to boot.

If you can't get somebody to allow you to process cards for less than Paypal, something is VERY wrong with you and/or your company.

DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND THIS. Carl is NOT a crook. I would wager that Carl takes paypal because there are eBay folks out there who still have the illusion it offers them some measure of protection. IF anything really did go wrong, I'd (really) bet my 928 that Carl (or 928 motorsports) had NOTHING to do with it.

(And we're still not sure that anything really did happen...)

Remember, Paypal ain't your bank, credit card issuer, or the USPS who sold you a money order. Paypal has almost NO regulation governing their behavior, and even less self motivation to do anything to help you. They will, however, cover their own *** at your expense, in a New York minute.

Andres, call your card issuer and get them to pull whatever that transaction was. Then run a virus, worm, and whatever else detector on your computer. (Sometimes that's how the hackers get you to click on fake paypal crap. Insert it into some legit transaction you're trying to excute...)

Finally, for the love of (fill in the blank) stay away from Paypal. With paypal, it is not a matter of "if" you get screwed, but "when". I know 10+ merchants who used to take it JUST for the eBay types. They have all learned the hard way. Just go through eBay and see that lots of folks who have been around no longer take paypal.

That, and it is soooo easy to hack their site and/or emulate it on some former Sov-Bloc mafia server, it is just not worth it.

YMMV

Good luck,

Greg

Almost definitely a scam. Looks like the site was registered just today (see below for contact info). Go to the 928moRtorsports.com web site and it simply steals the design and look of the actual 928motorsports site. I sent an e-mail to the hosting service and hopefully they'll pull the site before the con artist can dupe anyone else.

leperboy,
Bever Dam, Wisconsin is not that far from Carl's home - an hour maybe?

Carl, an inside job?

Well, I looked up the Motorsports hosting service and it's the same. The difference is that Carl is listed as the administrative contact for his site, and Powerweb is listed as the administrative contact for mortorsports.

Really, really strange. Maybe Carl created a mirror site, but why?

Maybe he did that to protect his site..from simple rip offs like the one you are describing...seems very co-incidental that the new site is so close to Carls actual business...

Good luck either way..

Hacker,

Wouldn't surpise me if it was Indonesian, or Sov-Bloc. They just hack a server near the location of the real business, so that a customer who gets 'itchy' sees the address is not next to the Kremlin and relaxes for the extra minute or two they need.

That location could be spoofed too.

I get a bit paranoid because I know too many Silicon Valley types from my days in SFO. (And some sofities, from my time in SEA...) They tell me the dozens of ways they can get into your box, run it, monitor your every keystroke, and then send you to sites that look just like real sites - but aren't.

Empty out your everything in about 20 minutes. This is a lot of the computer-based theft that still goes un/underreported.

holy Sh*T...

I thought this occurred because you typed in the wrong email address when you were sending the payment via paypal. I didn't realize that there was a fake motorsports website.

Andreas, I would login to paypal (the real one) and change your password ASAP. in addition, contact the credit card company and let them know what's happened (just incase someone tries to use the account).

Roger
