'88 A/T. Started hearing a moaning sound like a Power steering unit low on fluid, but coming from Tranny area. Actually it sounds more like it is coming from the torque converter when you're right under them. Checked the fluid and added about a quart and 1/4 to bring it up between min and max. Followed procedure with warm engine and moved through all gears before final check of level in neutral. Did not seem to have an effect on the noise. The tranny is performing perfectly so there are no symptems other than the noise. It is present in all gears and is somewhat RPM sensitive. By sensitive I mean it will increase and decrease in volumn as the RPMs change. Anyone want to give me the bad news?

There are six bolts which hold the flex plate to the torque convertor and the convertor bearings are on the flex plate so you still would not know which bearing were bad plus spinning the triangular shaped flex plate seems like a good way to really break things IF it HITS the raised blocks on the convertor. Torque tube bearings make noise and so do convertor bearings which is why we always recommend that the convertor bearings be changed when a rebuilt central tube is being installed.

Charley,
It did sound a lot like low fluid in the Ps (when turning the wheel).
It happened little by little, to the point that I didn't notice the difference in sound. I got pulled over for speeding (12 over the limit) and the officer couldn't believe the sound (he actually liked it). He said that HIS shark didn't sound like that.
My mechanic(s) said that the sound was coming from the front torque tube and they were correct.

p.s. I didn't get a ticket.
