Is this part of some type of shift kit? I found a place online that sells Merc trans parts. They offer some valve body kits for improved shifting. Do you have any experience with these folks? I think I found the trannys that would be in the 928. Check out the link and let me know. I will probably be contacting you for some more info on the 1st gear start mod. First gear starts are not causing your problem, IMO. You need to find out why the fluid is getting so hot. Since the tranny has apparently been pulled, I would STRONGLY suggest you check the preload on your thrust bearing ASAP. You don't need that problem.

Does anyone know the causes of the transmission getting too hot? So I can rule them out.

Perhaps a bad thermostat, IRRC the tranny doesnt circulate the fluid to the cooler unless it has too?
I have to do a bit of research on this also as i have yet to mount my tranny temp guage.

How do you know it IS running hot??

My tranny has seen its fair share of abuse since SC'ing. I highly dobut your going to overheat the tranny during your typical 928 driving..even if you are hard on it.

Mike, could be dragging brakes(do your rotors get real hot?) lack of a cooler or maybe there is ongoing internal slippage that you're just not noticing, but is generating heat.
