What exactly is wrong with using up all but a gallon of gas?

88 with a 2.20 rear end should get low to mid 20's mpg. I think I got 24mpg returning from the Pony Express, probably around 70-75mph most of the way. I only got 12mpg when I averaged 130mph during the race.

Nothing, as long as you don't run the pump dry -- IMHO. But I may be about to get a lesson that says otherwise. I don't worry about crud in the tank, since I recently had mine out and it was sparkling clean inside.

Yes...It is a 88 928s4, which I had to wrench (with some difficulty) from Tim's hands..over the last several weeks.

I think some of the pacific northwest crowd had a chance to meet Tim and "Sharkey" this last weekend.

I still have to get him to hand over the keys on Thursday...I think he is having difficulty saying goodbye! I don't blame him.

Happy Trails...should be back Sunday...

The in tank pump uses fuel as a heat sink.

I have replaced so many of them and it is almost always 2 factors involved.
1 no regular fuel filter changes
2 running with the tank low on gas and the pump over heats.

I have seen them blue from the heat before.

By far the biggest reason for fuel pump failure is running them with out fuel to cool them.

When I purchased the 81, I got a temp tag at the courthouse with the seller.
From Minnesota to Oregon I averaged 18.7 to 21.3 miles per gallon. The tank is 22.7 gallons. So using a 20 gallon tank (leaving 2.7 gal reserve) means 374 to 426 miles per tank.

I didn't really find out how far a tank would take me as I refill when the tank is at 1/4.

350 miles is a safe minimum.
Ask the seller if the low gas light works and how much gas is still in the tank when it comes on. Mine still has about 2.5 gallons when the light comes on but this does vary and is also adjustable.

Reserve is nominaly 8 liters a bit over two gallons total capacity 86 Liters or 22.7 gallons. Air up the tires keep it under 80 and you should get decent gas mileage stopping every 5 hours or so. Put our phone number in your cell in case you need parts along the way. 714 632 9288

I'm usually comfortable going 350 before I need to fill up. I recently was surprised to see that I was getting around 18mpg combination street and highway. Good luck on your trip and be safe

I got 19 mpg going 90-100+ on two trips from the bay area. I pushed the warning light a bit and got a little over 400 miles on a tank. It took a little over 21 gallons, that was close! Your '88 with the 2.20 rear end should do a bit better. Mine seems to get better mpg at higher speeds, no joke!

My 400 mile tank was the aforementioned 90-100+ mph trip. You must have a very heavy foot Brett!

Brett,

In town or highway?

I get about 270 miles to a tank in town at 40 - 55 mph; however, I get 370+ miles on the interstate at 70 - 80mph.

Like Bill, the faster I go the better the MPG!
