Default Wanted: Manual G28.10+

Hey all.

My tranny is getting worse rapidly. I give up.

Does anyone have an 85 - 89 manual they would like to sell (or donate if your so inclined =D )

I have some money left from another project I was hoping to start, but this is definitely a priority over any other expensive projects.

If anyone specifically has an 89 GT manual tranny, I would REALLY like to speak to you!!

John,
What is it doing? Is it "clacking" or just hard to shift?

Wow. As most of you know, Im not anywhere close to a mechanic! But Ill try to explain it.

3->2. Downshifting into 2nd gear is super difficult to find! Only when Im at very low speed with a minor blip of the throttle will it downshift. Sometimes even that doesnt do it. Even upshifting it often grinds the gears... Unless Im racing it harrrrd through the gears they all grind a little. Which is funny cause when I drag race other cars... she NEVER grinds, more like a "chunk" into each gear! So going 1st -> 2nd, unless Im driving hard or like a complete granny, kkkggght, ah, theres second!

Often, when sitting at a light. I have to seriously force it into first! If there is a little slope, I can let off the break and "coast" into first. Sometimes, If I forget to get out of second when I come to a stop. Eh eh, She aint comin outta gear without a fight!

We have put the best stuff in the gear box too. I used to try to drive nicely, but thats like trying not to look when you see an accident! Its not my daily driver so I try to have fun with it when I can, especially after our experience at SITM this year!!! HA!

Ill add more when I think of it.

I'm no expert on manual transmissions, but it sounds like the clutch isnt engaging enough. I once had a car that showed nearly exactly the same traits as yours, and it turned out that the rubber hydraulic line operating the clutch release was balooning under pressure. This caused the clutch to drag even when the pedal was all the way down.

Edit: Sorry, I should have said the clutch isnt disengaging enough. I was tired, about to go to bed!

Get it rebuilt. There are 3 rebuilders that I know of for the early 5 speeds. I don't have the contact info.

I would LOVE to have it rebuilt! Only I dont have any 928 tranny contacts. I just want to know what the diagnosis is!!

Ben... (anyone) I wish that was all it is! Please, how do I check for that?

928and RC51 - I can tear any Honda (MC) tranny apart!! (lord knows my days with Kawy, Suz and Yamy) If its on 2 wheels I got that! But throw in two more wheels... Im lost! Who is a great rebuilder you know of? Especially if they are in the DC area. Hook me for the Euro folks!!!

Could also be your pilot bearing. The input shaft could still be spinning with clutch applied.

Zeus+ --- LOVE that paint job and the all-one-color scheme!! The clear turns from Nicole would really look sharp too... imo!

Pilot bearing... thats on the list now too, thanks!

try shifting it without the engine running. if it shifts into each gear fine, then maybe the clutch is dragging a little. if it still doesn't easily go into each gear, then your tranny probably needs fixed. it's not really that difficult of a job. if you pull the tranny, you can rebuild it yourself, or then take it to a tranny shop and have them do it for probably alot less than a rebuilt unit.

Your dual disc clutch is probably not releasing like it should. This is hard on the tranny synchros. It could need adjustment of the intermediate disk, worn splines on the short shaft that the disks are on, or some other things already mentioned. Check for the proper amount of travel on the release arm. Do a critical evaluation of the clutch before tearing into the tranny. If the clutch really is ok, try Redline NS in the tranny. It helps tired synchros.

Hey Louis - Thanks for the suggestion. I think I will try to find someone in the area that can run through the clutch first, but when we put the new throwout bearing in (just in time), it was deemed "ok". That was back in March. Only a few hundred miles ago.

By the way, Thats when we put the NS in also.

Stan Shaw, Dave Tassinari would have some contact info for a tranny rebuilder. As I don't and most likely won't ever need it, I didn't take his info down.
Do a search on the "Wilbraham 928 event" as his info is listed in the thread.
