Default Engine Rotation

I finally have the transaxxle and TT back in the car. I have to rotate the engine to tighten the tt clamp. I recall someone saying that you should rotate the engine only one way or problems will occur. I can't imagine why but if true which way do I rotate the flywheel looking towards the front of the car.

The engine should turn clockwise when viewed from the front.

It can jump time if turned the other way.

Any engine with a timing belt should always be rotated so the tight side of the belt is on the other side of the tensioner.

In other words on a 928 when you are looking at the front of the motor the tensioner is on the left, so if you turn the engine clockwise the tensioner will be the slack side.

Steen......clockwise is the correct rotation.

What year and model of 928? Are you in the city?

I got my X from Dave Lomas in Utah. It's sans cats, bolts right up to the manifolds. Had a little issue connecting to the resonator pipes but cured that eventually, welded it on. Also experimented with different rear mufflers starting with a RMB, then the stock muffler and now a GT unit with the twin exit pipes which is the best so far. Still a little on the quiet side but that's ok for the longer trips, avoiding unwanted attention and easier sell to the SO.

Sounds good. I'd like to remove the Cats. Is there a fitting for the o2 sensor? Do you think there would be a noticable HP difference with stock exhaust sans cats? Does Lomas have a website?

Dave Lomas aka Motorsport Salt Lake City. They have a site, but IIRC its not too good. Better to look on their ebay for sale listing as you will see the x-pipe and other 928 goodies.

Yes, there's actually a fitting on both down pipes so you could mount 2 O2 sensors.

Large difference in SOP power; allows the engine to rev much free-er.

Daves web site is not the greatest, he spends to much time developing parts and fixing cars His RList name is Ketchmi which lists his phone numbers.

What sort of problems did you have installing the X-pipe?

.... which of course is counterclockwise from that perspective ( clockwise from the front view as already clarified)

None at all; it was making the X attach to the resonators properly. There's been many solutions proposed by Dave and other X suppliers.............I chose to eliminate any issue by eventually welding the X to the resonator pipes. This solution cures any issue of leakage between the 2 joints and I've no immediate intention of removing either so problem solved..............your decision may vary

Just to be 100% certain

standing in front of the car - with your long ratchet and 27mm socket on the front crank bolt the handle of the ratchet goes from your left to your right to turn the engine over. (Same as tightening the front crank bolt)

Re exhausts :- on a 90GT and on 88SE

H pipe, no cats, GT Resonators and RMB is too loud,
ditto with GT twin outlet rear muffler is right volume but sounds a bit odd
Front 2 in 2 out muffler (fitted to non cat cars) GT resonators and RMB is same volume as above (about right) and sounds great.

Eventually I will fit X pipe to the SE but it will need mufflers - don't know wether mufflers behind the X would be best or at the rear.

Righty -- tighty.

Just as if you were tightening the crank bolt and this will be the right rotation.
