Heh, heh.
As TomM points out, ideally, engine in the car, so you get to see the fan shroud removal, working around the hoses, maneuvering all the pieces-parts out of the way, etc. Engine out of the car helps people see what's going on in the car, which won't be so easy to view directly. We don't want to make this too complicated, but an engine on a stand that one of us could use for illustration and discussion while the other works on Perry's car. Whatever works. I'd be glad to help out with Bill Swift.

Hey there, Shane:
Could you explain to me how you get the crank to TDC with the fan in the way of getting to the crank bolt. You must use a small ratchet and socket set or some other technique. Also, doing the adjustment would be a contortionist act, I would think, unless you do it from below, and I hate removing the bellypan.
On 90+, the fan shroud comes out in 2 minutes with out any difficulty. On earlier S4's the fan shround removal is more of a bitch, but I still take it out so I can access the crank bolt and do the tension adjustment from above.
I'm sure there's a lot of ways to do this, so fill us in. I've probably been doing it the hard way the whole time.

Bill...lose the belly pan...and life will be simple..haha...but on the 89 and back..there are oil cooler lines that will need to be removed (or at least the upper one)... generally a pain in the butt..
i was able to use a long torque wrench and small extension...with the 27mm socket..at a bit of an angle to turn the motor over from the top..but from the bottom without a pan is easy. All in all..a pain in the behind with the pan....
then the small stubby 17mm wrenches..ratcheting of course...are needed when the A/C and smog pump are still in place....
Take a look at my car when I get there....you can basically climb in there adjust easily..(but I don't have a pan, a/c, smog etc...)...you'd be amazed at the access there is ....heck..Thurston (goldknight) even replace the tensioner at the side of the road a year or so ago... ..

Bill,
I actually have to retension mine shortly and seem to recall that I did so at one time with the fans in place. Yes turning the engine was a bitch, but I think I did it from below w/out the belly pan in place. I do not believe there really is a need to get to TDC per se, but you do need to go one revolution at least to confirm the adjustment.
Anyway, I will be doing the adjustment this weekend, so at least it will be fresh in my mind!

Ah, OK. Doing it from below w/o the bellypans is another way. To me, unless you have no bellypans, removing the fan shroud is easier. It's simple on a 90+, as we did with Nicole's car yesterday. Yes, on earlier cars, the upper oil cooler line must be detached to get the shroud out, and it's tight even then. But overall, if the bellypan is on the car, doing it from above is far simpler. No jacking, no crawling on the ground, easy access with a standard Gearwrench on the adjuster.
One time, when I was lazy, I used the ignition to pop the crank around. Flicked the key a bunch of times until it ended up on TDC. Not ideal.

I have all the t-belt video on the hard drive now. Just need to find time to edit it down and add all the fru-fru stuff that makes it possible to watch for more than a few minutes. I need a few days of your co-pilot's time. or maybe get Andrew or somebody that has more imagination (and time...) than I do.
Wish I was going to be at Sharktobersfest, but there were other plans made for me. I'm about a 50% attendee, and my car knows the way there by itself now. Like an alky to the leaking pipe at the brewery...

Just an FYI, my car has no belly pans. That is another add-on to my list when I get extra cash. I didn't mean for this to turn into a big project....I do like learning experiences though.

When BillB & I retensioned mine last week.....it was a major PITA to get the shround off......& back on too!
What was interesting was the first check (not at TDC) came back totally normal....once we rotated the engine to TDC the tension was quite a bit lower! Still in the kempf window, but on the low side.....a quick turn on the tensioner and rotated the engine.....its all good now!
It was such a PITA on the fan shroud....I almost think it would be easier to turn the engine from underneath...especially if you have no belly pans!
