Default Converting 82 3 speed to 4 speed auto???

Has anyone updated an early Automatic to a later series 4 speed... was it simple or complex? What parts were needed?

If it were me I would stick with the three sp trans. I have an 84' with the 4 sp and really don't like the way it works compared to the three sp that was in my 81'. Good luck with the project if you go for it.

When (if) I get the stroker motor done, I'll be seriously considering a 3 speed A/T retrograde in my S4. What am I going to need first gear for anyway? Wonder if I could keep the 2.20 diff?

Add a GearVendor and your 3spd becomes a 6spd.

We blew out two of the three speed transaxles with our 600HP and 600 lbs torque - I was told the 4 speed transaxles as odd as they are with 1st gear are much stronger.

Good to know.
Guess I may be holding onto the stock 4 speed.

Following the dictate that the only stupid question is one you don't ask, what is a GearVendor?

A further dictate is not to ask a question for which there is an answer available through "search"! Found it... thanks anyway.

IIRR '87 and younger 4sp box do not fit into older body without some mods to body on torque converter area.

This is what I have heard , a VERY large hammer apparently performs the required mods just be prepared to do some trial fitting.

Tell me about the "tweaking". My 80 3 speed takes forever to shift at WOT. It "hangs" between gears for almost a full second.
With the Vacuum Modulator connected. it hangs at WOT and part throttle.
With the VM disconnected, it shifts fast at part throttle, but hangs at WOT.
Adjustment of the VM seems to affect at which RPM it shifts, but not the time it takes to shift.

I updated my 79 to a 4speed.Easy to do and I don't remember having to hit anything with a hammer and the 79 has the large battery box.It will make a huge difference in your 0 to 30 time. You will like it.
