Eifert,
Shoot JFK an email. Think he mentioned how he had fuel sender removal problems.
Something about the anti-slosh device at the bottom of the tank snagging on the sender.

There were variations over the years, I'm not familiar with them all. This is just one example, my 1978. Upper pic of 2nd pump is rear section of wheelwell, lower picture of accumulator is forward section of wheelwell. Does that help?

Well, I've removed and cleaned the sensor, replaced the gasket at the botton of the tank, replaced the fuel accumulator & the filter and thought I knew it all. I did not know about the weir inside the tank nor the location of the second pump. Always something to learn, the first being that seldom do you know it all.

The white donut shaped ring came loose on my 78 euro upon removal of the sender. It actually pulled up out of the well and required some work to get the sender pulled out of it. It should be compressed back into the well before replacement of the sender. BTW the replacement tank (off a 91) didn't have the ring so it was probably omitted as unecessary on the later cars.

Never heard of three pumps being installed on the 928. I have read (up Fixin V?) that a second intank pump was installed on 928's destined for hot climates to keep them from vapor locking during hot idling. My early (Jan 78 mfgr) US 78 has one pump installed in the right rear fender well. My later euro 78 has a single pump mounted under the tank.

Just over two unless you are using an Ikea measuring cup. Neither is enough beer to help understand all the fuel pump variations.
