Yeah, you could buy yourself a boatload of early 928s for the cost of a pristine spyder...

Once you've driven a shark, it's hard to settle for anything less...

Yeah, now I want a new paint job and shiny rims! Maybe for Christmas, after the engine is tight.

Another pretty day for a drive.....

I'd like new paint too. It's going to have to wait a while though.... Got any pics of your car? Which wheels do you have now, slots? If so, 17" will tighten up steering response without breaking the bank on tires like 18" and especially 19" would. Or, if you like them, you could always just have them refinished -- though the selection of good 16" performance tires seems to diminish every year.

Not yet, I have a digital camera that's waiting to be used. I have a metallic gray 1981. Tires are stock 16". Maybe this weekend I'll give it a go and take pictures. I think since I've bought the car in August, It's spent more time with the shop then with me. Hopefully it'll be good for a bit before the winter hits here. Thanks for the tire tips...Funny, because I started to wonder what I could do about the steering...Any recommendations on a tire brand? By the way, where is Sunnyvale? I used to live with my Dad in Santa Monica, went to High School there......Have a good night.

For tires, I like Yokohama AVS ES-100, they work great in the wet and are acceptable all-around tires. Some here hate them because they say they get noisy as they wear, but I haven't had that problem. IMHO they are one of the better tires at the ~$100 price point. Really good tires can easily cost twice that, even in 17". The Yokos are also available in 16". Bill Ball has run on 16" AVS-ES100's in open road racing, up to 170mph without issues -- so they should be able to take anything your '81 can dish out.

If the steering is vague check for loose tie rods, loose rack, or more likely the rubber bushings that the rack mounts to are shot. I'd say make sure all is well there before upgrading wheels -- it might make a bigger difference depending on condition of the parts.

Sunnyvale is a bit north of Santa Monica -- -- it's at the lower tip of the San Francisco Bay, just North of San Jose.

Excellent point, Jack. That was one of the first things I took care of once I had the car running properly.

I am working for a while, kitty corner from Marquee Motors. Lot of nice Porshees there. I caught a glimse of a shiny red S inside.

Funny story though, today I saw one mech drive a (80's?) 911 outside because there was oil smoke just pouring out of the exhaust. The mech driver, and another mech then go inside, leaving the car running, smoke billowing.

I was distracted for a few minutes, looked back at the car to see them using a fire extinguiser in and under the engine! I didn't see any flames, but there was plenty of smoke. I wonder what they'll tell the owner.

They looked, at first, as if they were trying to clear out the engine.

The whole scene reminded me of that Pella window commercial, where one housewife is demonstrating to another, the blinds built into her windows, up, down, up, down. In the background, unseen by the wifees, is the husband and dog with the exploding barbeque. Except, I was playing the role of the housewife.

Ken it is normal to seat new rings on a 911 that way.

I haven't seen that commercial... but your description sounds comical. Too bad you didn't get video.

Is one expected to use a genuine Porsche fire extinguisher or are there acceptable lower-cost substitutes?

You guys are too funny! I always take a peak inside a shop that has tons of older 911's outside (it's on Powell?) Thanks for all the tips, I now have a "Porsche Notebook" full of your suggestions.....Slowly but surely I'll get it there. I took her out for another spin, god I love that car! I'll probably get yelled at but I didn't mean it.......I came off an exit, during crazy rush hour and took off in 1st and fish tailed it around the corner, IT WAS SO COOL! I just smiled, I had control the whole time but it showed me what I had.......What a beautiful day it was! Hope your weekend is going good as well....

So far so good... Little wrenching session from last night spilled over into today... Won't feel right going for a *real* drive till I get it aligned on Monday. Sounds like your car's running OK. Are the electrical issues you mentioned resolved? More than once, someone has posted here, "Strange electrical behavior, etc etc" then come back a bit later with "wiring harness melted, etc. etc." so don't ignore it when your lights dim or other strange electrical issues arise.
