Default Looking for my Soul Mate

I'm new to 928 ownership (or the potential for), but have been a fan since I was nine years old and first saw one. It looked like something off the moon. Been reading here and elsewhere for a few months ever since I realized I could afford to not only own but also maintain one.

I have seen a few nice cars but have been very scared to pull the trigger because I fear I don't know enough to not get into a money pit. I'm looking for some help in finding the right car for me. Really, no 928 is out of the question and I am willing to put both money and time into fixing a near-right car, but need support from you experts.

Preferences (none are deal breakers):

- I have targeted the 85-86.5 years as my favorite. The 86.5 would probably be the dream car for me.
- Automatic or manual isn't that important to me. I currently drive a three-on-the-tree, an automatic and a VW 5-speed (best thing about that junky car).
- Preferred colors: Blue over tan, blue over black, blue over blue, black over tan, black over gray... aw, heck, let's just say I prefer dark colors.
- Few owners (I don't want a car that has changed hands many times between owners who bought the car then decided they didn't want to maintain it)
- Low miles, although a high mileage car with a one or two meticulous owners is fine
- electronically fit

My budget for the car: up to about $13K for the car, understanding the reserve requirements for maintenance. I could go higher for a fantastic car.

I restore older cars, so have some mechanical skills, but because of the 928's complexity wouldn't feel comfortable doing more than things like fluid changes, filter changes, tune-ups and replacing external engine parts (starters, etc.) at first, so I don't want a project car. Something I can drive while I get comfortable with it. Also, I am in no hurry. I could buy a car tomorrow if it were right, but I'm not impulsive.

Any help? Anyone want to volunteer to be someone I can show ads to and gets some thoughts from an onwer's perspective?

By the way, this forum is fantastic and I appreciate all the knowledge.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt, have you looked at the black 88 that is posted here? That car is beautifull. It is a little more than you mention but it is low milage, well cared for and it is beautifull. I bought mine on Ebay. One thing you wan't to be sure of is to get a pre-purchase inspection. You will usually have to pay for it but it is worth it. Remember, on an auction, it must be what they say. It's what they don't say that you must watch out for. If you find one you like, there are many Rennlisters who will go look the car over for you given enough notice.

Welcome to the group and good luck on finding your soul mate

Thanks, guys.

I'm in the Denver metro area. So far, I've only seen suspect cars for sale around here. I'd love to meet any listers around here and get a tour of their car and some firsthand experience of what to look for. I'll even buy the beer.

I have seen the black one (I assume you mean Gary Knox's. It is gorgeous and I would trust a Rennlister before a stranger. It's a consideration for sure. My first preference is for 85-86., though.

I don't blame you Matt. I love Garys car but I preferr the old body style. My most recent is a 79 Euro. It is my third over the last 15 years. My next purchase will definately be an 86.5.

Good luck and be sure to post Pics when you du buy
