Default PACNW Track Day 12

Yep, hard to believe we have been at this so long. Today turned out to be better than normal, great weather once the fog cleared and all the cars went home in the same condition they arrived.

I only took pics of the cars and people, my digi camera does not do the cars on the track justice but Mike McMullen with his pro shot did. Hopefully he will post.

Evening began Friday with the BBQ and lots of gawking at Tim's new Elise and Adam's 18" phonedials.

Jim/Adam and the phonedials next to Tom's 89GT

Car park and Tom M and Tim (Elise) Taylor

Lots of car talk

More phonedials and 89GT

Thurston looks like he is running for the camera ....

Not much sun to begin with .....

What another great Track Day. I'm telling you listers, you should make the trip up to join the PacNW group during our twice yearly Track Attacks. It is the best DE type event you'll ever attend.
As Chris mentions, we've been at it so long as a group that the event has morphed into a dream come true track day. No run groups, passenger ride alongs, track hot the entire day, no passing zones (as long as you get the point by, you can pass) come and go as you please, a wide variety of interesting rides (in addition to the usual mass of 928s), and all of the attendies are very cool, and open to talking, and sharing rides and information.

Highlights for me included:
1) Getting to hang out with the PacNW group en masse once again, truly a great group of enthusiasts. We've all known each other for so long now, but every time I get to hang with all of these guys I still have the fresh enthusiasm as if its new all over again;
2) Seeing the 928's developing in the performance department. We had Jim's twin screwed GT and the Tom's Rear Mount Turbo GT on hand. Hopefully next time around we'll have a stroker or two on hand, and if Thurston gets his project rolling a TT on hand also; A lot more folks running aftermarket suspensions, and it was beneficial to be able to hop in other cars and compare them to my own set up.
3) My first drive in a race prepped 928. Thanks Chuck! What an awesome ride. We're talking an '83 US with an LH Euro motor. Totally stripped out with a roll cage. Jumping from my '88 A/T into this 5 speed beast was quite an experience. Even with the racing seat in place, the dash and pod replaced with different controls and gauges, and that odd third pedal, the environment was totally familiar. Flip the "Start" toggle switch and the car fires to life instantly. Strapped down into the racing seat in the 5 point harness is a little clausterphobic at first, that is until you hit that first turn. Chuck has the gas pedal stacked with a thick wood plate so that it is even with the brake pedal. That made heel/ toeing for even a torque converter disciple like me a no brainer. Well so I thought. I was fighting the downshifts for the first three laps but I finally got it figured out. Chuck told me later i the paddock that the synchros were worn, I think he was just trying to make me feel better. The distraction of clutching kept me from faithfully watching the digital tach, but I did look on ocassion and was shifting her right around 5Krpms which was good with me, I didn't want to risk wadding up the car by doing something screwy. Well, Chuck, being the awesome guy that he is, of course lambasts me after my run saying that I didn't give his car a proper flogging. Apparently, he removed the rev limiter and is comfortable shifting at 7K rpms. Sorry Chuck, next time I'll know. At any rate, it was such a wild ride being in a totally familiar environment, and yet having a totally different driving experience. This car was a total point and shoot affair. I could take any line on the track and the car would obey. In my S4, I'm relegated to the DE line. It doesn't have the grip or the power to get me out of trouble like Chuck's racer. Definitely a lifetime experience. And yes, you've convinced me that I need to pursue my license, so mission accomplished.
4) The Elise. I've seen these around, and there even was a different one at our last track event, but I've never taken the time to look closely at them. The reason being that I like big cars with big motors (that's why I own a 928 and not a 911), and hate to admit that a small engine in a light car can yield the same or better result than a higher horsepowered heavier car. Since this particular Elise was owned by a regular of our track event (his usual ride is an Audi S4), I was given the oppurtunity to share in Tim's enthusiasm about his new ride. When looking at the car, it is small, small, small. After literally wedging your way through the door opening and spanning an extra wide door sill that puts any Lambo to shame, you find your self in a space that boasts vastly more headroom and legroom than any 928. A look around the cockpit elicits nothing less than total admiration of the design focus of this purpose-built track car. From its 11 lbs (aftermarket) rims, to its teacup size gas tank, this IS a mouse that roars. And seeing its smiling "face" fill out my rearview mirror in the twisty portions of the track could only put a smile on my face, because I knew it's owner was bearing the same grin as his car. The Elise is a tenacious car, I've been schooled with an all new respect for its design.
5) The Strosek Rims. I'm running 235/35's up front and 265/35's in the rear on these 18's. There is a major difference in track handling, probably due to the low sidewall I think. They are bigger and lighter than the 225/255 x 17 Cup II copies I was running, but not by much. The sidewalls though are much shorter. I've got much crisper response with this new set up. The Kumho SPT's are also a very good all around tire. I believe they are the "summer tread" version of the 712's.

Yup Tony, those are the Stroseks' in 18's. Didn't know they made them in that size, so when I saw them I had to have 'em. They are my favorites, although I'm batting about .500 with everyone else. You either love 'em or hate 'em. These came from Bob Voytcheff in Vancouver B.C. He found them in Japan.

Thanks to Chris for once again organizing another great track day, and for opening up the Ford Inn for Wayward 928 owners.

Great cars...great guys...great track....great time! Wish I could have been there. You should have enough adrenaline pumping to last you until spring. Each year the cars get better.
