Replacing Rear Outer CV Boots
Both my rear outer boots are split open I heard they can be replaced without removing the entire axle (i.e. the big nut).
Anyone know for sure?

Darien,
I can't answer your question, but I can say that breaking off the axle nut is not that big a deal, and pulling the drive shafts out makes boot replacement a lot less of a PITA than doing it on your back under the car!

Oh, here's a link to an old thread with some tips on how to get that axle nut retorqued to spec:

Yes ,I believe they can , but it might be better to do it with the drive shafts/axles off, then you can do a grease change in the c/v's & swap sides when you put them back on (to increase c/v life)
P.S have a look at Tony's web site ,he details getting the nuts of ( and where to 'borrow' the spanner to do it )
EDITED to add link
See day 4 halfway down page

I concur on the need to pull the driveshafts. There's just no good way to clean out the old contaminated grease with the axles in place. Trust me-- you will save time overall if you pull them.

Yes, pull the axle shaft out. IT's easy, six bolts each side. The CV joint will need to be pressed off the axle shaft to replace boot. I have an '81 and found out aftermarket boots are available, but don't fit. For my year only original boots from Porsche fit. Don't know about your MY, but something to research before buying a boot kit.

The only time I had work done on my car was for the CV boots on the '81.
The aftermarket and Porsche boots are very tight, and are difficult to install.
I hope the boots for the 86.5 will go on easier!

Well, looks like the consensus is remove the axles... Boots should be here next Monday
Couple of questions:
Do I have to remove the inner boots to change the outer?
How are are the clamps tightened over the boots, does it require a special tool?
Are the clamps one-time use? If they slide off can they be re-positioned?

Darien,
Yes, you have to remove the inner boots to change the outer on later cars where the axle shaft is welded to the CV.
Some kits come with a clamp that only requires a screwdriver. These are re-usable. Others require one of the tools pictured below, depending on type -- and are generally NOT re-usable. Once they are on, they are on for good. More info, including tool usage, here.

Darien:
The inners come off to do the outers. If the inners are less than new, put new ones on now as part of your project.
The clamps that come with the better kits require the tool that's last in Dave A's photo illustration. Some of us use dull/blunt cable nippers instead with reasonable results. They look the same as Dave's tool, but lack that center piece that squares the crimped part of the clamp.
The first tool in Dave's series is sometimes called a 'band-it' tool for clamps that get pulled tight and dimpled. These are less common on cars but used often in industry. Nice stuff, very durable.

Thanks for the advice Dave. I ordered them from 928 Spec. She says they are the right ones for my car. They were $30.00 for each kit. I sure hope they are the right ones. I guess I will know on Saturday

Dave,
Great write-up
Not sure which clamps come with the kits from DR, but if I need the tool, would someone be willing to let me borrow/rent there's??
