His GTS is this one? It's interesting that it was build in January '92 when normally model years first production cars are made in July of previous calendar year already. Only explanation must be really serious slowdown of US sales and too many unsold '91 MY cars. By May '92 Porsche was making ROW GTS with VIN's in above 400 range, meaning they had made around 350 ROW cars while making only few tens of US models. But as its difficult to find any ROW GTS for sale with first registration date before December '91, I suspect also '92 MY GTS ROW production started later than normally.

Still, Porsche had made at least one ROW, RHD ROW and US model already by June '91 as silver US model was used to make '92 MY brochure and this marketing video. Unless unlisted 5063 at Chuck's site is silver there were at least one US '92 GTS or early '93 GTS prototype (possibly with VIN 5001) made. Third option is that car in brochure and video is '91 VIN GTS. Its possible to say can VIN 5063 be silver one in video even without knowing what color it is if 5061 (and possibly 5062 also) were made after June '91. If they were, it means Chuck's early '93 GTS list is missing at least one US model GTS prototype.

Next open question is what was build date of last late (true) '93 MY GTS VIN 0162? It must have been done already before first '94 MY VIN car was done in May '93. This makes model year time limits very strange compared to normal 'July calendar year before to June calendar year' period. In ROW all but maybe '92 MY GTS followed normal cycle AFAIK. In US slow sales messed up entire production all the way up to '94 MY cars.

Hey Randy, we have only done a dozen or so RDK-ectomys this year, we have it down pretty well. The problem is that the owner would know it was modified from stock and that's not acceptable on this car.

Is this the only leather covered rear view mirror documented?

Ya...that is wretchedness…I'd drop everything I was doing to have that car. You know, through the years on Rennlist, I've really been fortunate to have been exposed to these pristine examples that I probably never would have seen otherwise.

That color combo is a killer

The wheels in the picture as used on the 93 GTS's and 91-92 turbos are commonly known as Cup 1's the later wheel used on the 94-95 and 993's were known as cup II's the reasoning behind this is because they actually follow the design designation. The flat dish wheels used on the S4/GT were designated by the factory as design 90's the 93 GTS 91-92 turbo wheels are design 91's used on the original Cup cars ie. Cup 1's the later design are design 92's and since they followed the same form as the Cup 1's have been known as Cup II's. Technically they should be called design 91's and design 92's.

Porsche was going through a serious internal revamp in late 1993. They were retooling for the new 993 release with a more mechanized production facility. Many late build 1993 cars were M718 coded with revised vin number designating them as 1994 MY cars. This included these few GTS's the first 288 of 466 94 turbo 3.6's all the 1994 RS Americas and the 200 964 C4 widebody's. My turbo was built in May of 1993 most likely in production at the same time and the balance of the 3.6's were completed before December of 1993 although all were sold as 94's.

Although the M718 code was used to allow previous model year engines in the following year car the transmissions don't have a link to this. I have spoken to an M718 coded GTS and his auto did have the kick down feature, although everything else is strictly 1993 spec.

Quite an impressive find, destined to be one of the most coveted GTS in the US. I would love to see what price Willhoit would place on this beauty just for ****s and goggles but I wouldn't hesitate to say he would ask a min of $100k and I for one would be happy to have it even at that price.

Same M718 option usage do not seem to apply ROW models. There might have been gaps in ROW production also but for some reason Porsche didn't see need to call these cars anything else than what they are.

AFAIK the M718 only applies to US models based on US regulations and PCNA. IIRC the ROW market classifies their cars based on year of initial registration but I am going off memory from the mid 80's when I helped import cars for the gray market.

ROW Porsches do have MY info in them. Its just not that important to buyer what it is. Most people do not have any idea what different letters and number in VIN mean. Some manufacturers like Ferrari did leave year out from ROW car VIN as it wasn't madatory until recently.
