Stock rear muffler differences and RMB
Some may recall a discussion not long ago re. what rear muffler is best matched to the new era of 'X' pipes.
I had a RMB before the 'X' so thats how I started with GT resonators. After a few months I resorted back to the original rear muffler and found that it did too good a job of 'silencing' the rumble.
So the next step was to try a rear muffler from a '90 S4 (thanks Rod) with the twin outlet pipes and the results are similar to stock. The 2 stock mufflers are very similar in weight and noise output with the newer muffler being better to look at.
So in conclusion I'm happy with the newer muffler but would still like something in between the RMB and it.
Another solution perhaps is to add cats to the X or go with S4 resonators and then back to a RMB...............we'll see.

I was thinking a GT rear muffler might do the trick. Should be lighter and a bit louder, but maybe not. A buddy's 89 GT with stock muffler is about as quiet as my S4 was originally.

I have x with cats and the rest is stock GT system.
A tad to quiet but I think a RMb will make it to loud for my taste.
Not sure either what would be best here, but you are running x and no cats right?

There are two different 'GT' mufflers. I'm not sure exactly what the model year breakdown is - but my '89 had a twin-outlet muffler that was significantly lighter and hollower (using a knuckle test) than the visually identical muffler from my '91. When you knuckle-knock the '91's muffler you get a thud - from what one would assume is a lot of 'stuff' on the inside to make it quiet - while on the '89's you get a ringing sound. The '89 muffler is also about 25% lighter than the '91 - maybe more.
The 'light and loud' GT muffler is 928 111 097 03 and the 'heavy and quiet' GT muffler is 928 111 097 04. The 03 muffler sounds a lot like an RMB at idle but doesn't get as loud (and doesn't sound as good) as an RMB when you mash the right foot. The 04 muffler was on my '91 and was very quiet all the time. But, it seems that the 03 muffler may have been standard after 91 when the "GT" resonators (928 111 093 03 / 094 02) were supplanted by - one would assume - larger "GTS" resonators (928 111 094/093 04). '87 resonators where the largest and are numbered 928 111 093/094 01. I don't know what size the "GTS" resonators are - my GTS has a complete '89 GT exhaust.
So what's the point of all that? Well, you cannot tell about mufflers by look. There are three different sets of resonators. And you don't know what you have unless you look at part numbers.
You should yell for 928andRC51. He (Carl) has been mixing and matching the various exhaust components to find that 'right' sound on his '87.

Interesting that PET does not list the 'light and loud' GT muffler.

The part numbers stamped on the rear mufflers are the same although they are not with my original having the single outlet and the other having twin. The twin outlet muffler came off a '90 S4.

He has GT resonators, a Lomas X-pipe, no cats and has tried the RMB, '03' GT muffler, and two different custom rear mufflers. The latter sounded fine (a bit loud) but the worst part was a harmonic resonance in the 2500 to 3000 rpm range. It was a DRONER. I'm arranging a swap of his GT resonators for original '87 'suitcase' resonators. He'll then try the whole set of mufflers again.

You may not be interested in this, but I put two Flowmaster - Husmaster II's (stainless steel) on my 82 with cats and no other muffler when I put full duals on it and I think it sounds great!!!. They're connected to my old 87 downpipes and cats until I get a cross over for it. You can get them for about $125.00 each and I think they will fit neatly in place of the intermediate mufflers you now have. You probably need to have hangers fabricated, but it should be no problem.
I am contemplating this with the 90 when I put the cross pipe, cats and RMB instead of the small stock intermediate mufflers.
