I'd be interested in a set.

I had one ring break, and had a neighbor use something called "plastic zap" that seems to be holding pretty well. He swabbed some gel on the joint, had me hold it together, and then he sprayed some type of aerosol catalyzer. Pretty cool, but you can still see the seam from the break.

I need a full set too (2 small and 2 of the larger) for the doors of an 86. But I really need a small grill too (one is missing)....

I confess that I have not found the time to go buy the raw materials. We have looked for them but have not yet found a supplier of aluminum stock from which to cut the rings. It has not been at the top of my list. So blame me. But until I find more time to drive all over the Bay Area it won't reach the top of that list. And until I settle a legal battle in which I am involved I will not likely find the time or the money to make the first batch of these rings. Life has its ups and downs. Sorry.

It would be nice to get some replacement solution together.

These plastic parts get SOOOO brittle with age. I have re-drilled holes on the unbroken sections of the speaker mountings to keep the speakers securely screwed in place. That has lasted a number of years.

Broken rings that hold the speaker grille - those are real buggers. My last "temporary" fix was, using the smallest drill bit I could find, drill two small holes in the ring and tie the broken sections together with thin wire or fishing line. This has held up well as it allows some give during heat cycles. Still would be better to replace with fresh parts, but DEFINITELY better than a speaker without a grille, or having the grills pop off every other time someone slams the door!

Heres to hoping for a permanent solution someday.

OK, I said I would do this. I will do my best to do it. But it will not be any sooner than 6 weeks from now, as I expect to settle within that time and will have more time and cash to throw at it. (I personally use Krazy glue to reglue those &%***##!!**@!!! rings together). I'll go looking for some aluminum stock and try to pressure my machinist friend into doing the job. He doesn't want to do it because he does bigger jobs, but maybe I can give him beer or something else, like filthy videos or whatever. Aw that won't work, 'cause he loves his wife and family. Think of something else that will entice him to do this job; at least make some initial rings. He claims he will destroy many rings before he gets it right on his cnc machine. And wacky tabaccy won't work 'cause he doesn't do that. Just need to catch him in the right mood.........

Hi Ron , I have had a missing tweeter ring on my 86 (screw on type) for a few years now and at one time met a machinist who said to me that he could fabricate these out of a stronger plastic or metal..at a low cost..since I have been caught on other projects I have left this for another time Maybe I can get some prices and samples made up to test as well. If your machinist doesnt come through.or has prolems maybe we will have a better chance of getting this worked out with two looking for a solution . I feel alot of broken rings are out there in our 928s and this would be a great fix for us all. Dave

Great Dave. Metal or plastic would still be better than what I have which is a line where the break is and a floppy ring. We'll both investigate this situation.

I wonder if a slightly taller and larger outside diameter replacement grille ring will be that much noticeable to the casual observer. That will give the machinists extra "meat" to work with. Not sure how well the CNC machine can cut those threads on such a thin part having never seen one in action.

In about a week or so I should be drawing the rings on Cadd for the machinist to use. The suggestion about designing extra height into the rings will be considered and makes sense. If both small and large rings are equally thick it should not be noticeable. A progress report will be coming this time next week.
Tune again then, same channel and same time for the latest report.

We are on it and should have the raw materials by next week. Once an acceptable prototype has been successfully created and we can package them, I'll post photos. It may be simpler than we first thought according to the machinist. I'll keep everyone updated.

speaker rings are definately a nessessity but what about tweeter speaker mounts?
