Hi, I've located an '89 928 GT with ~80k that I would love to purchase. Assuming the vehicle is in good condition, what is a fair price? The seller is asking $25k--it seems a little steep to me but there is very little I can find anywhere as to what a fair price is. Kelly blue book lists an '89 s4 with 80k at $13k but I think this seems low. I would appreciate any advice on the subject.

it really depends on the condition and maintenace records. It could be worth much less, or perhaps even more. A GT is definitely worth more than an S4.

You need to have a 928 qualified mechanic do a pre purchase inspection (PPI) for you.

Let us know where you are, and someone here may be able to refer you, or help you themself.

Welcome to the board- I purchased a 108K mile 1990 GT 3 months ago and have gotten a huge wealth of info and help from the board. I'm sure that folks with an (several) orders of magnitude more knowledge and experience will chime in, but for 25K, that '89 GT better be EXTREMELY well maintained and as close to turn-key as you can reasonably expect. There's some premium involved with the '89 vs other GT's, but 25K is still a strong price (unless the car is truly immaculate, in which case, maybe it isn't...)

You'll get better feedback if you can tell more about the car, especially the known maintenance history. My bias is that the cosmetics (paint and interior) are more important the mechanical condition, since you'll likely want to bring all the mechanicals up to snuff just so you can sleep at night. At least that's been the approach I took with mine, YMMV.

If the car's within 50 miles of Orange County, CA, I'd happily look at it for you, as would many of the people elsewhere in the country on this board- we probably have your geography covered!

Before I read very far, $25k popped into my head. Should be able to settle for around $22k-$23k assuming the car is in great condition. One the key things to watchout for is to make sure it really is a GT. There are 89 5-speeds and 89 GT's. Not a lot of difference, but the 89GT is extremely rare. Good luck.

For reference, that is about what I paid for mine ('89 GT), but it was and is in very good condition and has lower miles (at 64500 now). I have every service record from day 1 as well. IMHO, I would not pay what they are asking for anything less than pristine condition.

Seems high, but they always seem high in the U.S. Paid $19,000 Cdn 4 months ago for my '90 GT. Great shape, 123,000 km, timing belt done @ 83,000km, OZ racing wheels, and Tri-Flow exhaust. Down side is no real history. Recently blew air con compressor, and needs motor mounts. Gonna do the timing belt and all other belts as well for extended zzzzzzzz's at night. Sweet car if you expect the unexpected.

I disagree with Foz. The 89GT is a unique car and should command a premium. It ALL depends on condition. I paid 23K for my 91GT three years ago. Get a PPI and then talk price.

You want the best, be prepared to pay more for it. Had my ex 89GT had a better paint job, I would have got 25k for it also.

Also, check with Chuck Z site to confirm it is a GT. Get the VIN number and look it up on Chuck's site. Couple of other things fro someone who has owned an 89 GT since '92, when she only had 10,000 miles on her.

1) Does it have the original club sport wheels?

2) Spacers between the rear hubs and wheels?

3) get the options list from the top of the gas tank, under the rear cargo rug The come back here and list the option numbers. One of them is designated "89 GT" another is the "Posi" rearend and the 220 gears. (I would put all that info here, but I am in the north woods bear hunting, and stopped for a quick cuppa, they have wifi)

4) Condition. When was the last time the belt and H2O pump were done?

5) Work the clutch carefully, both with the engine running and with out. "feel" for granular or smooth movement, listen for noises like a chirp or a grinding noise.

6) look to see that the complete tool kit is there, including the air compressor.

7) climate control, make sure it all works.

8) PPI, above all make sure to get a PPI done by a 928 qualified mechanic.

The 89 GT is an awsome machine. If you end up with it, treat is right and it will give you decades of pure enjoyment.
