The 89 GT was unique in that it had some port matching done on the intake, the diff gears are straight cut rather than hypoid cut to allow better transfer of power but is a bit more noisy). The 89GT motors were also spec'd at exactly 10:1 CR..whereas the standards S4 motors had a range of 9.4 to 10.0 : 1 (10:1 -0.6).
All that said..the 89 5sp is relatively rare and unique too..given it's 2.64 rear..

Wow--never thought I'd get this many responses so quickly. Thank you all for your help! Sounds like $25k is fair only if it's in pristine condition. At least now I have a starting point from which to negotiate. The car is in Colorado and I'm in North Carolina, so I need to be pretty sure I want the car (well, of course I want the car! but do I want this particular car for this price!) before I fly out to Colorado to maybe drive it home (what a sweet ride that would be). Thanks again to everyone that replied.
Munfred.
P.S. Thanks for the link to the car in Canada (Colin); my wife's from Canada so it wouldn't be such a strange idea for us to go to Canada to pick up a car...

Thanks Rob for offering to help with looking at the car; unfortunately the car resides in Colorado. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your GT? They seem similar as far as miles, etc--of course condition of the vehicle makes a huge difference--from appearances and claims the car I'm looking at is probably in good to very good condition but not excellent condition.

The one in Canada might be a good deal, it would be around 15k USD. The car is just outside of Calgary and if I remember right has less than 80K miles on it
Good luck

Options to look for are:
220 Limited slip diff, standard in GT
474 Sport suspension, very common in '89 GT
639 GT, almost must have for '89 to be GT and not S4 5sp
Due to different cams GT has two torque spikes reversed compared to S4. S4 has little higher spike in 3k than on 4k, GT has it other way around. Actual max torque number is same.

Love my '89 GT. A little more raw than the later GT cars, no PSD, no airbags, pretty sure the '89's all had the sport suspension as well. Already mentioned were port matched intake, cams, increased redline, CS wheels/17mm spacers, different exhaust resonators/muffler, 2:73 straight cut gears, LSD, 10:1 compression.
As far as price, there was a white/black '89 GT for sale in NY about a month ago in the PCA newsletter with under 29,150 miles for $25,000. I don't know anything else about the car or if it is still F/S, the contact number was 917 748 2710. If you are looking to spend that kind of $$$, might be worth a call.
They are fun, special, and somewhat rare cars. Enjoy it if you find a good one.

Malcolm,
Good stuff I thought you might see this, that price is awesome!! Let me know how it goes, he is about half an hour from my place. If it's good get it, I don't think we will see a fairly low mileage car for that kind of price again.

My friend Chris recently paid $28K for a 25K '90 GT in mint condition. He had the original wheels and a nice set of 3 piece wheels as well; I think he got a steal. There are not too many pristine GTs around, and there may be only 1 or 2 for sale a year that nice.
p.s. we were considering the '90 GT that Rob Edwards bought, but he was all over it and he was local.

Munford,
That's way to much for that car if you ask me! I should know, I've bought and sold two different '89 GT's. Personally, I like the '90 and '91's better anyway, but some people prefer older models with less options. The '89's have no airbags, no tire pressure monitoring system, the old dash, etc.
'89 GT owners will tell you that those things are unwanted, but in fact, they just don't have them. Newer most always means better, and this is certainly the case with Porsche.
Okay, ironically, I've once owned and sold two different '89 GT's that rolled right off the assembly line back to back! Now that's a very small world!
They were both desireable black. One with tan interior and one with black. One had 26,000 miles on it and the other had 32,000 miles on it. I paid $24,000 for the 26,000 miler and $20,000 for he 32,000 miler. I sold the 26K car for $32K and the 32K car for $28K. Bare in mind that this was about 5 years ago with both. I would assume that the prices have only gone down since then. I did just pay $25K for a 40,000 mile '91 GT that I just had listed about a month ago on Ebay. I ended up selling it off Ebay for $32K. But that's two years newer than your '89, more refined, and with half the miles.
I'll attach from Chuck Z's website the two different '89 GT's that I bought and sold.

Good luck with your search. And if you need any real help finding one, especially with lower miles, just PM me.......................for free, of course. I only make money on these cars once I already own it. Otherwise, I'll always gladly point those genuinely interested in the right direction of possibly great cars and let them do the rest from there.
