Wiring Nightmare
OK, I’ve had it with the wire spaghetti mess the PO had created by cutting the wire loom in random places (and leaving them exposed) and the hack wiring of the aftermarket gages, stereo and other stuff, most which I’ve now removed. I have spent just about a month worth of weekends trying to “clean up” the mess only to find that some little wire somewhere that I can’t find must’ve been cut. So far I’ve painstakingly found and fixed four shorts, gotten the windows to go up and down, the sunroof to open and close and most of the AM gages to work. The only lights that work are the break lights and the aftermarket projector lights. The fuse panel has less then half of the fuses left in it, the rest no longer seem to apply. The same goes for the relays.
The only wiring and electronics that seem intact are those from the computer to the engine, thank the car gods.
At this point I’m thinking that the whole car needs to be rewired but with many of the original electronics (dash gages, HAVC sys, warning lights, OEM headlights, pod wiring, etc.) missing I don’t think it would make any sense to get a new 928 harness and fuse panel.
So the question is… Does any one know of an aftermarket source or someone that can put together a custom fuse box kit based on what I do have left in the car? Or, suggestions on how to go about re-doing the wiring?

With a number of exceptions, e.g. Dome light being tied to gauge lights, most of the systems are pretty well isolated from one another. I'd suggest getting the full wiring diagram, tape the schematic pages end-to-end so you can see how the wires go from one page to the next, and use a highlighter to mark the stuff that you need. Then trace those circuits down, solder & heat-shrink where a needed wire is cut, and eventually you should get it. There is no easy way out, IMHO.

Did that car belong to a guy named George?
One company that comes to mind for a harness is Painless wiring. I haven't used them in many years but they did some custom Jeep CJ harness' for me back in the early 90's.

Yes it did.
I know about Painless, I'm helping my neighber with his '64 Chevelle that we put one of their kits in. I called them but the guy said that they really only do Hot Rods and American cars they didn't have or know anything about Porsches and less about 928s.
I should also add that a lot of the original wiring is MIA which means that I will need new wires as well.

Sorry to hear of the issues w/ the car, When I saw it 3 years ago he was just getting it sorted. Still one of my favorite 928's.

Huh - I was always under the impression that the workmanship and attention-to-detail were first-rate on Phat 928.

One thing that should keep you going is knowing how great everything will be after you finish all of this mess. I would love to have a fully rewired 928, all new and reliable without the items that you don't need.
It is going to be sweet.

The guy in San Jose that is converting his 928 into an electric car, and that sold me his entire exhaust system for $50 also pulled the entire wiring harness out of his 928 (20+ pounds). He's selling all the petrol parts for CHEAP just to reclaim the space in his garage, so I'm sure you could pick up his entire wiring harness including fuse/relay board for a song ($20?). It might help with troubleshooting if you had a completely separate wiring harness where you could see the wiring colors & length. If you are interested, here is his Craigslist ad:

Just called Jeff, he has many useful parts except the wire harness which was cut in to peices while removing all 40 lbs. of it, besides he wants to hold on to whats left for a while.

I am trying to use the mychron unit for all of the functions of a factory guage set. It will do that and much more....I just haven't had the time to get the sensors hooked up.
I don't think most track car wiring jobs are dealing with power windows, climate control etc. It's easy to simplify like this if you only need the basics.

I have full street lighting, wipers, horn etc. All of the wires terminate in this main panel box. Switches are in the middle row, "on" indicator light above each switch and a push-in, 1/4 turn fuse holder below each switch. I bench wired the whole thing and then connected the various wires to the switch terminals.
