Default 18x10" up front

hey you guys, here are some pics of 18x10 et 65mm wheels fitted to the front. they are oem turbo twist wheels which were original fittment to the rear of the 996 carrera4S. i was running with 18x8 et50mm hollowspokes and i estimate about 4kg difference (each) between them and these new rims which are not hollowspoke. the reason for the swap is to carry more rubber up front, ive mounted 255 vs the 235 i had on the 8" rims.

blau928 has 285 on the same size/offset rims and i know the 255 are a conservative choice but i wanted to see how they would fit. so far so good, no rub on full lock and im going to the nurburgring next weekend so i will see how they go under compression, hopefully ok when i was fitting them they didnt seem to stick out any further than the smaller tyre/rim combo ie 235 on 8" with et 50mm. also, blau928 used a spacer to clearance the calliper - not needed with the turbo2 and GTS callipers.

That's a load of rubber. Looking forward to the Ring report.

Nice! I wish I had 18's. I've got a set of Anderson's old Kinesis racing 17's. x9 up front and x11 on rear. I have Pilot Sports mounted with 285's front and 315's rear.

Hi Nick

Be careful under compression....I have 996 wheels on mine with 52 offset on front and although they are only 7.5 x 18 ...they look very very near to the same position as yours as regards lip position...
Today I hit a bump hard under compression...and my wing lip HIT the tyre...HARD !!

Just take it easy until you are sure...

All the best Brett

Default Tire looks to narrow?

Looks like you need a bigger tread width; 285?

I'm no expert, just looking at slope on sidewall,

Best of luck!

yeah, the slope on the sidewall bothers me too.

Seems you could have mounted 255's on 9" no? why go the extra to 10" on the front - do you anticipate going wider in future? (255's a lot of rubber already on the front). How is the steering feel @ 255 (/35's?).

The side wall is angled indeed - but that will help you with clearance - they do look far out there in the wells - but its hard to tell from that photo angle...

With the 10" wheels it looks like the tires bead won't protect you against any curbs so be carefull snugging up to things - narrower wheels would probably get you a little protection with the same tires...

Good luck - I should think the Nurburgring will be a good enough test!

I love it. 10x18et65 is a fairly common size, particularly amongst BBS wheels. And 255 is a good fit to avoid rub. Tires like Michelin Pilot Sport Cups really like the wide rim/narrower tire combination. Michelin's literature recommends that trapezoidal shape for the sidewalls & tread.

I'm running 10"x18" on the front of my car but there's more offset than 65 mm so it rubs on the swaybar. Some extra steering rack spacers have cured that but there's less lock than before. Fine at the track but a slight annoyance around town.

the steering feel so far is much the same as with the previous 235 tyres, i cant tell any difference around town or parking. turn in might be a bit more direct and whether its psychological or not the front feels like you can lean on it more in sweepers. why the 10" rim size? this is a stock oem porsche wheel, much cheaper than anything custom but the sizing isnt ideal for a 928. on the other hand im happy with it as a solution to carrying more rubber without going custom and incurring the expense.

according to michelin 255 is the smalest tyre that can fit on a 10' rim, i was worried about clearing the fender under compression as brett points out so i opted for this size. i did some calculations looking at the overall diameter of my previous wheel/trye combo vs this one and the differences in overall diameter are actualy about 0.2" aprox. subtract the added offset of the 10"rim at 65mm vs the 8" rim at 50mm and the 255 mounted should actualy sit further towards the inside of the wheel well and have greater clearance from the wheel arch!

i will definitely have to be more careful when parking against curbs but i think that if these fit ok i might try 265 next time. dennis ir right though, if i was choosing a custom 10" rim it should carry something like 80mm offset. overall im happy though so far
