Default 928 Clutch

Hello List

I am looking for some advice and help. My 84 928S has sticky gear shift in 1st and second and the clutch is not smooth. If I do not use a bit of feel, i get shudder, especialy when it is warm. I have been told that it is a worn pressure plate.

This is where I need some advice. There is a company who can recondition the entire clutch. They say that they do race car clutches so the 928 clutch will not be a problem. Can this be done or do I have to go for a new clutch?

Secondly, does anyone have instructions on how to do the clutch job?

Look forward to any help.

Thanks

I see that there is another Jay on the list so I will use my second name

Anthony.

Do some searches and you'll find lots of data on this. Also, get a copy of the service manuals. They're available on CD. Another search of the archives will put you on them.

He has a double disc clutch - there is a laundry list of what can cause these clutches to hang up and drag - causing the worn out synchros.

Reason why I posted links to those threads.

The shudder could also be a mis-aligned, broken or work intermediate disc.

I have a copy of the Chilton's manual and I've appreciated the blown out views of the clutch assembly that it offers. I'm not sure how hard it is to get hold of a Chilton's. I could scan the diagrams if you need me to.

Peace,
Tim

Thanks all for your input. Over here in South Africa, the quote I have for a clutch job is $1500 US so not a small sum.

The parts are not cheap, especially the intermediate plate. 928 clutches are the easiest to change of any car I've encountered. It basically just drops right out, there is no need to separate large structures like eng/trans as on other cars. You could DIY with all new parts including stub shaft & resurface the flywheel if needed for maybe $1600 if you use cheaper OEM parts. His price assumes that some parts will be left in, and it's important that he know what can & can't be left as is. Caveat Emptor.

Default scans

Anthony:

Give me a coupla days and I'll send you some scans. The clutch does indeed drop out. I'm hoping to do some rehabbing of mine as well over the winter months.

Winter is what we have here in the midwest between November and March.

Peace,
Tim
