Well, it rained, so it washed some of the dirt off for my second look.

It's been painted. I think it's original color going by areas not normally repainted. I've seen worse, but I would class this as a driver and no better.

The motor's been replaced. The mechanics said someone botched a flex plate job and ruined the original. Replacement was sourced from 928 Int'l, engine code M28/49. They said it's been faultless since they put it in a couple years ago.

It's certainly not a cherry. I might end up passing on this one.

It seems from your description that this GTS should be at best valued as an S4/GT with the same mileage in the same condition. There seems to be no reason so pay the 'GTS premium' for it.

OK... ...so why the repaint???

It is tough to justify painting a 1993 Porsche unless there was a damn good reason.

Botched a flex plate job? That hardley sounds possible. The only way to do that...is ...well...to not do it!. I think there is more to this car than meets the eye if you didn't get the full story the first visit.

However, before you pass, acquiring a GTS does not suck! If the price is right, it could be a bargain depending on what needs to be done. A PPI is still a must, but that could be your bargaining chip...and the owner needs not to know any details you do not want him to know after the PPI. The owner obviously has minimal knowledge of upkeeping a 928. This could be the power of reason in getting him to just get rid of the car at a very worthwhile price to you.

If that doesn't work, think of your future 928 brothers here. If you pass on this opportunity...pass it to us. It may just be worth our while to pursue this car. I would be interested in an auto GTS fior the right price.

It’s entirely possible. Too much forward load in the torque tube and it will wipe out an automatic S4/GT/GTS engine. I’m pretty sure it was a trust bearing failure.

Someone local has contacted me via PM about that. I'll give him the full details (at least all that I know) here shortly.

That's what he told me happened.

hey Brian!

I just got off the phone with the shop about this and then saw this thread. I'm traveling to Philly this week but saw the ad in the Houston Chronicle before I left and planned on getting some info.

Same as you, the guy I talked to mentioned that they replaced the engine - that it shows 97000 miles but the engine was a used one that they put in and it was at about 50,000 miles. He really didn't know anything about the car other than it wasn't theirs but they were selling it for a customer. With the initial phone conversation I had, I wasn't left feeling very comfortable with this car and it's condition... I'd be happy to go with you to look at it again if you want...

Do you have any pictures by the way just for grins?

Thats what I had meant. The job is taking the load off the coupler.....

OK - so I go and check out the car myself today after speaking with Brian yesterday about what he saw.

Like he mentioned, this car has been neglected - definitely no love from the owner. Issues like all tires need replacing, 2 wheels are curbed, seals on the doors are crap, gap between the passenger fender and door, too small a gap between fender and cowl, door arrestors not working, only cool (not cold) A/C, bowed reflector, didn't want to start after driving it (needed to step on gas), pod just starting to crack, brake and tail warning lights after turning the headlights on. Paint job only OK - not great. According to Porsche, the original paint was Black Metallic (after running the VIN). In the light, it did look like metallic black but I didn't see it inside the shop.

Driving it, it actually drove quite well - pulled very strongly, tracked straight and stopped straight. It definitely had more power than my chipped 86.5 and it was nice looking in the mirrors (even though they didn't work electrically) and seeing the big GTS butt sticking out

There are definitely mileage issues on this one - I didn't run a check but I think Brian did and there have been mileage issues for a long time. In fact, I 'found' a receipt among the junk on the passenger floor which has a replaced battery last September and a mileage of 99,600. Today, the odometer shows 97000miles. Hmmmmm...

So bottom line - drives well. Mileage issues. A lot of electrical gremlins. Definitely a 'driver' and not a show car. Maybe a low-ball offer is in order? I'll have to think about that.

What would you guys pay for a car like this? I know some of you will say RUN away from this one, but even though it seems as if it's been neglected, I think if there was something that needed to be done, it was fixed. Since the owners girlfriend was the driver when she came to town, I think a lot of things were ignored.

Very hard to say the value without seeing it for myself. It is worth more than you will pay, let's put it that way. However, I would start by figuring out what it would take to get the car to prime condition, then deduct that from the average pricing GTS auto's are going for. Throw in the higher mileage and the not knowing exact mileage. the crappy repair and repaint due to the accident the car was in. (You called it on the left front fender gap) and anything the other stuff you guys mentioned like tires and such. Does the owner have any idea of the value or what it will cost to get this car back to the condition it deserves?

I doubt it. If he had, I wouldn't think he would have neglected it so.

Other personal developments have taken me out of the running anyway. Oh well.

time for a low-ball offer I think... we'll see if the guys at the shop kick me out when I deliver the sheet to them with all the issues on it!

Depending on exact symptoms this could be anything from minor wiring problems to TBF.
