I doubt the sender is bad. It is fluctuating and showing 3 Bar at idle.

I've never seen or heard of the "!" coming on for high oil pressure. But then - my old brain is subject to lapses!!!

Well, all of my cars show 3 at idle, 5 during acceleration and 4+ while cruising. The previous 928s I've owned were the same, yet they all ran perfect...even after 200+k.

The best way to check identify what is triggering the warning light is to turn the ignition switch to the on position without starting the car. All warning lights should now be lit. If one is not, chances are that's the cuprit.

Oil pressure at idle is 3-4. Jumps to 5 bars with any acceleration. What could cause this?
How much oil should this car be filled with?
What would cause the warning light on the top center of the dash to come on? The red ! light.
Thanks for your help!
this is horrible you have to pull the engine. i bet your temp gauge goes halfway up too ....

Mine idles at around 3, 2.5 when warm and any blip of the throttle puts it up to 5 bar immediately. If its keeping you up nights or suspect the oil pressure sender is going bad you can test the oil pressure and be sure. The manual calls for a special tool VW 1342 and a couple of adapters that get threaded into the engine once the oil sender is pulled. Before going through all that trouble I'd check and make sure the electrical connections on the sender and to the pod are clean and in good condition.

If the Central Warning light comes on with no accompanying warning indicator then this could mean that the relevant warning lamps in the dash have been removed to hide the actual cause. This is usually explained by the seller as "it's just the washer fluid is low - nothing to worry about". Switch on the ignition and check which warning lights work and which don't, you'll find several pics here of your MY dash so it should become clear what is missing.

Yes sir!

That could be a timing belt light coming on....

Turn your key to "on", but don't start the engine. One of your "idiot" lights should say "belt" and show a little symbol that looks like two wheels with a belt between them. If you don't see this DON'T START THE CAR! Get it to a shop and have the belt tension checked!

All I can say is...the exact same thing happened to me and when I changed the unit...no more issues. (but to be fair....it shot up over 5 bars. when rev'ed...to the max and idle seemed fine exacpt the engine light sometimes came on after a good run)...? Just trying to help the guy...

If the alternator is not charging properly, the [!] will come on. Also, AFAIK, it's sensitive to burnt out idiot lights, too.

Norm - Toothed Belt warning starts in '85.

Ken's right -- no TB warning on an 83... Dave H & Paul(UKKid) hit the nail on the head. The "!" light should never come on without some other light indicating why it came on. The behavior you describe indicates that you have at least one bad warning bulb.

As others have said, oil pressure gauge behavior sounds healthy.

If you're trying to help the guy don't tell him to buy unnecessary parts to 'fix' his car. The bypass valve opens at 8 bar, so over 5 is not unusual. It should be 5+ bar above around 1500-2000 rpms depending on temp and oil brand/viscosity.

Joe if it makes you feel any better my 928 is at 2.5 bars but once im on the move it indicates 5. Seems strange to me that it's set up that way being the list number on the gauge. My question on this is when these cars had less miles on them did they do the same thing. I have 91,000 currently.
