GT Sport Suspension? Don't Count On It.
I am in the middle of installing 928SP front and rear Performance Sway Bars, Koni ext. adj shocks/ Eibach Springs and some other goodies. Anyhoo it dawned me as I was removing the old shocks/springs that of the 4 GT's I have owned 3 of them have the grey 'normal' shocks. The odds of this happening would seem to be slim. I wonder how many came that way?

Are you sure that they aren't light blue?

I had red boge sports on mine, but the car had sport suspension on the build sheet. I think it was standard on the '89 GT package (not positive on this), and optional on the '90 and '91's.
I do like the bilstein/eibach setup much better.

90 GT: 2 reds, 2 gray
I've got reds on the front, and grays on the back. The rears were replaced 35K miles ago in 1999, the fronts are original. And tonight I got a shot of my spring markings: 3 brown marks on the fronts:

Since I'm color I went out and checked the #'s 928 333 051 16, gray. Man, I'm surprised how many GT's didn't have the Sport Suspension.

i wonder if it is just US cars that had the red dampers available in a still seperate sport package, that would have been standard on ROW GT models in 90 -91
Typically we get the version minus a few goodies, i think the 89 probably had the sports stock, as the 89 has an option code for GT package, where our 90-91 cars dont.
I am sure there is some logic to it all, its just not known by me.

AFAIK at least '90-91 GT's had greys as standard and M474 was optional in ROW cars, not sure about '89. Makes sense anyway. Since S4 wasn't available with manual gearbox anymore "soft" manual car "had" to be offered.

My 89 GT has red boges allround with option M474 Sports suspension packet (Boge red sports shocks/GT springs).
They seem ok but well be replaced this winter with B/E package .

I posted this once before, maybe it will help, maybe not;
Section 40-47 in WSM FRONT SUSPENSION
For adjustable struts****
Green stripes- 928S w/ pressureless boge's 83-85
928S w/ bilsteins from 84 on
Brown stripes- 928S w/ Boge gas 86 on
1,2, or 3 stripes which deal with rate
For NON-adjustable spring struts****
Blue - 928 w/ Boge
928S w/ Boge
White (only 1 or 2 stripes)- 928 w/ Boge
928 w/ Boge
White/Green - 928 w/ Bilstein
928S w/ Bilstein
Difference between Blue and White just seems to be a shift that happened during the production run to simplify from 3 to 2 categories.
Section 40-51 details the shock color coding which is severely confusing also
It would seem that green or gold paint on the actual shock indicates bilstein.
So clean your spings, check your color and see what you got.
