Default MM/oil pan gasket/tie rods/PS flush in Orange County 8/19

For anyone with time to kill next Saturday, I will be hiding under my '90 putting in Anchor mounts, a RealGasket, tie rods, and changing out the PS reservoir and some hoses. The wife and kids are going to be in HI, so I'll be in the garage all weekend long. I'm on the UC Irvine campus, feel free to PM me for directions if anyone wants to come and laugh at my novice wrenching skills. There may be a vintage Hefeweizen or two in the fridge, and a case of diet Cokes for me.....

You doing all this on your back? By mid-day Saturday you'll be wishing you were in Hawaii with the family.

You can use a second pair of hands, although I did MM and pan gasket alone....but it was on a lift. It took me 12 hours. The only part that stops most people is aligning the crossmember supports for these long horizontal bolts. Most people pry and swear. Someone posted a method to position the supports using a couple of bolts screwed into the lower A-arm, as I vaguely recall.

You MUST have a 10 mm Gearwrench for the pan bolts. I didn't, which accounts for probably 2 hours turning several of the more inaccessible bolts a face at a time.

I've heard some complain that all the big bolts on the crossmember were stuck hard; an impact wrench might be handy. I didn't find any problems like that, however.

Bill-

Thanks for the tips, I have a pretty IR2131 impact wrench (which was indispensable for re-doing my bimmerwagen's whole suspension a while back), a regular and a stubby 10 mm gearwrench, and I just got back from Home Despot with a pair of M10x1.5 x 100 mm bolts for aligning the crossmember (Deliriousga posted it here. I hope they don't need to be theaded their whole length, though I suppose I could run them through a die if necessary.

As far as chassis corrosion on this car, I've been blessed by it being 1) A SoCal car all its life) and 2) so slimed underneath with oil/PS fluid that nothing could possibly have corroded....

Rob:

Excellent! Sounds like you are very ready and just need a few listers to drink beer and listen to you grunt and groan. Thanks for providing the link to that tip with the bolts. I need to bookmark that.

I need to do my pan gasket and MM too, and maybe my steering rack. I would come down and lend a hand just for the education but I also have 60,000 miles on my timing belt/wp and maybe I'd better find a way to replace those first. Sure would love to get the experience though.
