I have searched the threads and came up with a lot of posts but not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm wondering what would be involved in buying a car in Canada that was originally from California, or at least registered here, and bringing it back and registering it in California again. Would there be any benefit or need to use a broker? It is being sold by a private party in Vancouver, BC.

I have done this before, here are the steps, I even managed to import some rare cars from Canada (that came straight Japan) and I am still dazed that I got through!!!
1) Contact the EPA and give them the VIN, they will verify that the car is a US car and meets Bumper, Crash and Emission levels. This is Free, it is easy, sounds daunting, go to their website and get the contact info. I got a confirmation within an hour, they have staff that do specifically this!
2) Take the car and Fax'd EPA letter to US Customs - usually at the airport. They will give you some forms to register the car at your DMV. This is Free
3) You may or may not need to take the car to your State Patrol, and they will verify the VIN to make sure that the car is not stolen. This is Free
4) Then off to the DMV you go to licence the car.
Good luck.
