Default stock clutch

Since sc'ing, My stock clutch just ain't up to the task. To be fair, I think it was slipping before the sc. Anyway what do you guys recommend as far as replacement clutch that will take the power? Abby and I were discussing it and he decided on Carl's clutch kit. I found a complete gts kit for 850.00 even includes an alignment tool! What do you think?

Thanks, Kevin

I am going to upgrade my clutch after the S4 is turboed as well. The twin disk would be best, but in the interest of cost and simplicity I will probably go SPEC. They claim to have a unit that will hold 500+ ft-lbs. Hope so, cause I'm gonna need it.

Remember, you are talking in terms of torque here. I've heard mixed reviews on the SPEC product, but honestly I have no experience with them.

The one from Carl is rated @750ftlbs and is still freindly for every day driving.

My biggest consideration was how I plan to use the car with the extra power and sticky tires.

My question about the GTS set up is, what is it rated for?

I, too, thought about Carl's setup, but in my research IIRC the GTS clutch is rated for about 600ftlbs. So I figured that's good enough. So that's what I'm running now, and I have no issues. My biggest concern was the daily drivability of Carl's setup. I know the GTS clutch is certainly drivable and I know I'll be able to get parts for it for quite a while. Don't remember the price differential. Just remember, you'll probably need to budget a new release arm that works with the TO bearing if you go with the GTS setup. Not sure about Carl's.

Kevin if it didn't work before the sc, then I'd say it's a fair bet it won't work now ... I think stock clutch is fine.

No. Clamping force is much higher, and TO bearing is different.

I don't really want to switch from the dual disc set up. From reading a few threads here, it seems that the double disc is overall stronger and in many cases preferred. With plans on running higher boost in the future, I probably will need the GT1 set up from Carl.

Kevin,

I would think you'll be ok with the GTS set up unless you plan on turning it up in the future OR doing a lot of drag style launches.

Sorry... didn't realize you have the DD set up. Yeah... stick with that. You'll be fine.

I think that a new OEM dual disk kit will be more than enough for your needs. Your clutch is slipping because it’s worn out and the addition of the SC made this really evident and not because the SC is over powering a good clutch. If anything, replace the pressure plate with a stronger unit and use OEM disks.

Mark,

Are there differences in the DD clutch disks between the years? Do you know what they are?

Not sure if you mean me or Kevin, however once I venture into 16psig territory with drag radials, the stock clutch is toast. It works fine as is with the stock motor though.

Well the stock DD clutch can handle quiet a bit. I’m only running 6psi but managed to get many 2.0X sec. 60’ times at the drag strip and that was on stock 225 tires. So you can imagine just how hard the clutch was working to keep the tires from spinning too much and still get a descent launch off the line. If you are plan on running 16psi with drag radial, the clutch you’ll need with be an on/off type drag racing clutch. I’m not sure if any of the higher torque kits will hold up to that much stress. Drag clutches are never street friendly they act like they are either fully engaged or fully disengaged. Slipping them for a smooth start is extremely difficult if not impossible.

Since you’ll be running drag radials, what is your planned weak link? Is it the axles or the torque tube, cause you don’t want the transmission to be the one.
