Default Poll: Powdercoated parts: Yea or Nay

I recently had my "spider" intake powder-coated. I'm not completely happy with the results....here are the pictures. Should I take the parts back to the shop and complain, or just live with it?

Normy, was that pock mark effect a result of the powder coating or in the casting? If the former, I would not be happy.

To me it looks like a question of whether the casting was prepared to be smooth first. Did they explain what you should expect for a result? Is there a chance they didn't know you want to pay extra to have them prepped? I am just guessing, but I wouldn't be happy with those results.

The way the casting is on those parts, I doubt having them re-do it will make it any better. How is the powder coating wrong? Can't tell for sure from the pics but I don't see where it is the shop's fault.

If the imperfections are because of the powdercoating then take it back.

I agree with Stan, if it's due to the powder coating it's a pretty shi**y job. I've taken back better looking ones than that.

They make my home job look good... I'd take the parts back and rip them a new one.

Can someone please post pics of some other PC'd intake tubes for a comparison?

Cropped zoom on mine.
Left runner good and smooth, next a little rougher, next rough front running low on powder, next uneven and blotchy since I dropped it and did a poor job on the recoat. They all have big sweaty palm prints on them.

Nobody explained anything to me. I took the clean castings to them and asked them to powdercoat them. I degreased them before I took them there, and they degreased them again and outgassed the parts before they coated them. I don't know how all the "acne" pock-marks got there. It occurs to me that this shouldn't happen...

There will always be surface imperfections that will show through but those look mottled. Powder coating follows some of the same rules as painting. If it is not clean you will get "fish eyes" just as easy as paint.

This cam cover had corrosion underneath the factory "paint" and it is evident that the powdercoating does not erase the imperfections but you can also see a undisturbed surface of powdercoating which is the same thickness and gloss.

Thanx for the picture Matt! The only problem: black hides things....

Thanx again!

Being that their black, I'm guessing the imperfections are not as visible.

Contamination. I had that problem on a few parts which then went from silverish to black.
