Cool Want a see something cool? (928 x-ray)

Hey Gents,

Check it out – this is an x-ray (backscatter image) of my Shark.

Like all my vehicles I take them to work once in a while when I service & perform maintenance on some of the X-Ray systems I work on. Today I decided to take the Shark rather than my normal daily driver to perform a PM on a mobile x-ray truck. Now when I finish I always like to do a test scan to make sure that the system is indeed fully functional before turning it back over to my customers.

Anyway now ya know what the innards of a Shark look like?

Pretty cool or what?

Very cool. What would happen to the fuel injection computer, etc, if you did that to a later car? On second thought, what would happen to your "boys" if you were sitting in it?

And make sure she's cute, and not obscured by the door reinforcement bar.

BTW guys the exposure from this system is less than you’d get flying at 35,000 feet cross country. So no effect on any electronics in a vehicle. In fact besides drugs & other illicit contraband the people I work with find people hiding in the vehicle all the time.

That's cool! Would be cooler if you were sitting in it and were waving at the camera!

That's what the wife does at work. Supporting the Seizures and Penalties Division Bureau of Customs and Border Protection U.S. Department of Homeland Security. You can find lots of hidden things in a car this way. I lost a Zippo in my Maxima and we found it in the air duct under the passanger seat that blows a/c to the back seats. Pulled the seat out and removed tube, and bingo! I dont want to know how much it costs, but since she was doing four other cars we stuck mine in the line-up. Very little if any exposure to radiation, so the boy's will be fine.

What kVp and mAs are you using, how many rads?

I agree, I'd like to download the original. Way cool!

Talking my language Rick,

The actual X-Ray system runs at 450KV & 6.65MA. Because the length of each scan varies, there is no real way to calculate mAs. That is a derivative of current & time and it is a formula used mostly in medical imaging.

But what insures low doses is the method employed. Our systems uses a device called a chopper wheel that spins around the axis of the shielded x-ray tube. On that wheel are 4 or 8 hollow spokes that collimate the x-rays to escape as ~1/8th inch pencil thin x-ray beam as the wheel spins at several hundred RPMs past the x-ray tube’s opening. Thus minimizing dosage and giving the detectors a more finite beam.

As for exposure rate: I don’t have that information in front of me. But I do know that the exposure is less than what you would receive from back ground radiation you’d get from a round trip flight across the US = 5 mrem/yr.

BTW the US annual dose avg is 350 millirem/year. Here are some other examples of exposure rates we are exposed to each year naturally:
Cosmic= 30
Diet = 40
Radon= 200
Terrestrial= 30

Here are some man made sources of radiation that contribute to that annual rate:
Cigarette smoking= 1300
Medical= 53
Building materials= 3.6
Gas Range= 0.2

Hope that clears things up for some of you?
